First impressions

Lego can be played with by people of all ages. Duplo is basically Lego for very small children, but once you move onto the basic Lego sets and then the more advanced stuff you will find that some of the sets designed for teenagers can also appeal to adults. Here we have the Lego Seattle Space Needle, and this is part of the vast Lego Architecture range. I wasn’t aware of the Lego Architecture range until a few years after it was introduced, but now I can look for sets and discover some of the older designs, not having to wait for the release of new models in the range.

I can see the appeal of this range to adults, though the age guide is actually 10 years plus. The Architecture range comes with varying age guides, but this one is one of the easier models to put together, and it is extremely simple when you get to grips with it. You could be forgiven for thinking that most of the buildings in this range are just tall grey things, but they have had a lot of time spent on them in their design, and there is no mistaking that this is indeed the Seattle Space Needle.

My experience

I wouldn’t claim to be aware of all of the designs in the Lego Architecture range, but what we have here is the simplest of Lego sets you could imagine, at least considering its size. At a little over 22cm in height and 8cm across at the base it is not huge, but it is something that is going to stand out in any Lego collection. You may be wondering how complicated it is to build, but with just 57 pieces in the set you will actually find yourself taking your time, dragging out that enjoyment in building the Seattle Space Needle.

Construction is simple enough. The instructions are obviously required as this isn’t just a vehicle that you have a rough idea of what it should look like. The Seattle Space Needle does have a few large pieces that can be put together quickly, and then you are left struggling to drag the job out any further.

I was actually disappointed at how short construction time was, and the 10 years plus age guide should have given it away to me. The reason why it didn’t is that the small pieces do suggest this is not going to be aimed at very small children, and because of this I instantly expected a more complicated build. I knew it wouldn’t challenge me as such, but I do like to spend an hour or 3 putting something like this together.

There is an instruction manual, which I found straightforward to follow, and if you were buying this for a teenager it would certainly boost their confidence with Lego, as they can build something like this in a few minutes. The booklet does give detailed facts and figures relating to the Seattle Space Needle, and I think this is a nice addition, along with the display stand which indicates what the building actually is.

Price and availability

As this is not a new model it falls into the collectible and desirable category as far as the Lego brand is concerned. The RRP was £19.99 on its release in 2009, though prices have risen since due to the rarity value and the fact you cannot just go and buy one from the shops. An opened box will hit the price, but you should still be paying £25, with sealed boxes costing upwards of £35 and £40.

Final thoughts

I have to say that I am left a little disappointed with the Seattle Space Needle. The build was far too simple, and Lego could have made this a more detailed design, but also made the building a little bit taller. I can understand that as this is an old model they were just getting to grips with the Architecture range, and with them upgrading the Burj Khalifa they may do the same for some of these older, easier and smaller models in the range.
