Lego Duplo 10510: Ripslinger's Air Race

First impressions

I cannot be sure that everyone will have heard of the Red Bull Air race, but the Disney Pixar Air Race may be more familiar, with Ripslinger competing in this Red Bull Air Race inspired set. The Disney Planes are popular with kids, and although they may not have seen or heard of them, they will love this set due to the aviation link. I know that my nephew is into trains and cars mainly, but he does often look into the sky and say “what is that noise?!’. Kids are fascinated by anything and everything, providing it is new to them. I suppose this is an important point to note, as after a while they can easily become bored of things, and so buying affordable toys that can be swopped or passed on to others is an important consideration. The Lego and Duplo ranges are very popular, and the second hand market is strong for such sets.

What we have here is the Air Race, and the brightly coloured planes and scenery are likely to capture the imagination of any child, especially with the eyes on the planes giving them personalities. Your child can pit the planes against one another, performing a series of maneuvres in order to win points and a high score to lift that golden trophy!

My experience

The Duplo sets are almost always brightly coloured. This one is no different, and the plane theme will appeal to young minds. There are a total of 40 pieces in this set. This may not seem a lot, but you must remember this set is designed for children from the age of 2 years up to 5 years, so they are still learning and developing at different rates, so the set has to be manageable for all. To give you an idea of how simple the set is to put together, the planes themselves comprise of a body, a set of wheels and a propeller. The obstacles are simple to construct also, with easy to put together building blocks.

The theme of the set is an air race, and this is obvious from the set name of ‘Ripslinger’s Air Race’. These sets are becoming more popular these days with the Red Bull Air Race seen on TV, and this is a fun and exciting sport for children to watch. This is a Disney themed set, though even if a child doesn’t understand this they will still like the characters, with eyes on the planes they come to life.

Duplo sets do come with basic instructions, but I think a lot of these sets are put together how the child wants to put them together. You cannot expect a 2 year old child to follow a set of instructions! We even have a fuel can in the set, and the planes can be refueled before they take to the skies to compete in their air race, hoping to win the ultimate prize which is the gleaming trophy that sits on the blue stand.

This set may appear basic to adults, but to a child the challenge is manageable but also rewarding. At first they are likely to struggle, but once they get the hang of where all the pieces go they will love building it, and the planes are often the first items to be put together, for obvious reasons!

Price and availability

This is a discontinued set, though this shouldn’t put you off if you do want to buy it. The RRP of £19.99 is a good guide to work from, and buying the set in good used condition can be sensible, with prices starting at around the £5 mark. If you are looking to buy the set in brand new sealed boxed condition then you should be expecting to pay from £25 to £30.

Final thoughts

Overall I think this is a fun set, and it went down well with my nephew. The subject is interesting and can be played with by either one or two children, in my opinion. The planes are fun and exciting, and the very colourful pieces are sure to attract the attention of your child once they see them. My nephew loves picking up the box and just pouring everything out onto the floor. At least now he is able to put some of these sets together, which is a bonus.
