I have been playing with Duplo bricks today at work and I was inspired to write about them. I have found out they were first produced in 1969 Duplo bricks are suitable for children aged 2 upwards. to about 5 this of course will depend on your childs individual development. So what are Duplo bricks? just in case you have never played with them, although I think that's unlikely. Duplo bricks are a hard plastic bricks that fit into each other in the same way as Lego. They are bright colours red, green, blue, yellow, black. These bricks are larger than Lego, about 4cm for a small brick with 4 nobly bits to join them together 8cm for a large one with 8 joining knobbly bits. These pieces are easy to stick together once your child lines them up correctly. There are some duplo bricks that have wheels so you can build your car There are duplo bricks shaped like people , duplo bricks shaped like animals , duplo bricks that have eyes printed on to them . There are rounded duplo bricks, ones which have a sloping edge, ones that have windmill arms attached. Lego bricks of different characters there is a bob the builder set, or Dora the explorer with her palm tree. Go look at www.lego for info on all the bricks there are too many for me to mention here. Duplo bricks are available in sets of various sizes at babies R U S, a tub of 90 chunky duplo bricks cost £9.99p. This would be an excellent starter set (hey just looked E l c selling these at a fiver on offer). A duplo farm including animals, farmer and his wife, a barn and lots of other items cost £19.99 A sheep a cow and a couple of fences costs £1.99p, a policeman on a motor bile £3 a pick up truck with driver and a few tools about £7.00. So that should give you an idea of prices. There are many sets of different sizes available. Basic brick tubs are good and then add any characters or sets that your child will have an interest in. New sets get added by duplo lego as time goes by so see what is available . These are always a good present for a young child. My daughter has a set with some farm animals in it when she was about 3 now at 27 she has a son aged 2 who is playing with them. So yes they are very durable withstand a lot of abuse throwing around and chewing. East to clean by washing to get any germs of, my school ones need this as they do go in all the childrens mouths , yeuk
Are they educational? Of course they are stacking, building a tower developing motor skills. Sorting making a red tower or a blue one, learning colours Lego are a good strong colour. Language development, tall tower, short, big and little plus learning the names of colours . Early maths counting, adding and subtraction build a red tower 2 high add 3 yellow bricks how high is it? These bricks will hepl develop your childs creativity and Imaginary play. The duplo Sets farm, trains, lend themselves to children's imaginary play making the sets and pretending they are there. If two or more children are playing together it will encourage co-operation making a model between then or just sharing the best bricks, good for practicing turn taking to make a tower /house each child taking turns to lay a piece.
Sally had fun laying on her tummy on the floor 25 yrs ago making models pushing the cars she had made or putting the animals in the sheds she had made. Children today still get as much fun. They can play with duplo either on the floor or at the table with friends or on their own Duplo bricks should last a generation as Sally's have. They are a classic toy brick that I think will still be produced for many years. Go on play with your child's duplo and remember playing with it as a child yourself. Remember have fun playing with your children While they play they are Also learning.
Advantages: They're everything a good toy should be! Disadvantages: You always need more than you already have!
...used to enjoy playing with Lego as a child, and now that I have a little boy of my own, who's almost two and is getting into more constructive (as opposed to distructive!) play, I was quite excited to start him on Lego, only to find out that Lego is not recommended for under 5's. Then I found the perfect solution: Duplo!
Duplo is twice the size of Lego (twice the width, length and depth), but if you look at the overall volume, it's actually 8 times ... ...compatible with the regular sized Lego bricks, so you can build on your existing Duplo collection once your child is old enough to start using Legos. I have only just started our Duplo collection, and if I would have any criticism it is that individual bricks are not available in a pick & mix format: you always have to buy a set. I started out by purchasing a tub of Duplos containing 140 basic bricks (product code: 5352) for £9.99 (originally £19.99) ...

I just love LegoDuplobricks. One of the best pre schools, early year's toys there is.
I have played with many, many sets of duplo due to the Pre School /early years and special schools I have worked in. The first Duplobricks were marketed by Lego in 1969 I began my training in 1970. So that's 38 years of playing with Duplobricks for me.
Duplobricks come in many different sets today I will be talking about the DuploLego set 2242 Brick starters. This box first available 1997
This Duplo set of bricks is presented in a cardboard box if you have a plastic tub transfer then to it ass the box will break after your toddler has tried to open it a few times. Stick the picture from the box on the tub then you and your child will know what's inside.

Advantages: Really good selection of bricks Disadvantages: none
I was trawling the toy section to find a product I knew about and I found masses of Lego and Duplo that no one has written about. I spied a deluxe box of Duplo and thought I would write about it. I have played with many Lego and Duplobricks with children in my career and always think the Duplo good. Duplobricks last well my grandchildren are playing with my daughters bricks that she played with 29 year olds ago.
This deluxe box of Duplo is a fairly new product I think it would make a great present for any child between the age of 1 year and 4 years.
