I was looking for some fun things to get to play with my nephew who is four years old. I was on the Lego website and I saw that this 'Duplo Zoo Sticker Set' was reduced from £1.99 to £0.99 (which I thought was too much of a bargain to pass up!) I decided to buy it along with some other items.
The sticker set is from the popular 'Duplo' series. Duplo is like the popular 'Lego' series but for younger children, meaning that the building blocks are larger and the themes are maybe not as technical as the more 'grown-up' Lego. This particular sticker set was found under the 'Stationary' section on the Lego website.
All young children seem to like animals and the zoo so this seemed like a fun sticker set to get. The set consists of stickers, and a background to stick the stickers to. You get six different animal stickers with the set. They are an elephant, a baby elephant, an alligator, a zebra, a lion and a lion cub. Along with these larger animal stickers there are also some smaller food stickers in the shapes of paw prints (you get five of these), two steaks, four carrots and four apples. These make nice little additions to add alongside the animal stickers. The stickers are not actual photos of real life animals, but instead are cartoon drawings. They are really cute though! The animal stickers are around 10cm long and the smaller food stickers are around 1cm - 2cm long. There are quite a lot of stickers to put on the background so it may look slightly overcrowded, but that is part of the fun of it, you can't have a zoo with no animals!
Along with the stickers you get a shiny cardboard background to stick the stickers on to. The background is made of thin cardboard and has a fold down the middle so it can be easily closed and stored away. The background is slightly larger than A4 size. The background is meant to look like a zoo enclosure. It has lots of trees on it, a lake, some flower gardens, grass and some paths to place your animal stickers in and around! At the top left-hand side of the background there is the 'Lego' symbol, and then the 'Duplo' symbol right next to it. At the bottom left-hand side of the background there is a little sign on a stick saying 'Lego Ville'.
It says that the stickers can be re-used again and again, but the stickers are just like normal stickers, it is the background that is shiny and slightly laminated meaning that you can peel the stickers off, but this makes the stickers curl slightly and ultimately they loose their stickiness. I think it would have been a better idea if the stickers would have been made out of the plastic type material that you can get which you can use to stick on windows and other laminated surfaces that you can peel off and that can be used over and over, because after you remove these stickers and put them back on a few times then it is very hard to get them to stick again. There is also no way of cleaning them since they are made of paper and glue so once they have lost their stickiness then they have had it!
The sticker set is for children aged 3+ and I would agree with this. Some of the stickers are quite small and not good for little people to put in their mouths! I think this would be good for children around 3 - 6 years old, any older than that and I think that it may lose its appeal slightly. I think this was a fun activity set to get, my nephew really liked the fact that he could choose which stickers he wanted to use and choose where to place them on the board. I was a bit miffed that the stickers wouldn't be able to be used again and again, but I guess for 99p you can't really go wrong.
