money - the only outlay that you will have is the initial cost of actually buying the Lego in, which isn't very much depending on where you buy it from. But with that said, the only Lego sets that I have seen recently in shops have been actual models of cars; bikes; helicopters etc or hospital sets (i.e. set things to build with instructions), but no actual sets of just random Lego blocks for you to use at your own leisure. However, that doesn't stop you from using the bricks in the sets as general pieces to build something else with! Wear and tear wise, these bricks can go on for years - many of mine have even been through the washing machine! But they can get lost or stuck in various different places, or may get broken if trodden on with enough force. Lego Lego Lego

Advantages: Great learing and never goes out of fashion
Disadvantages: can be expensive

Lego Lego Lego, I love it. When I was a child it was the only thing I would ever play with. I owned a big box of it and I would dissaper into my bedroom for hours making houses to play pretend, I would see how high I could build a tower up the wall, make cars and casltes. This never failed to amuse me. my son has never been the building type so I never bought him any he would much prefer to be destructive. So when I met my current partner it was great his son loved lego it made it so much easier for me and him to relate to each other too we would spend hours building things and using our imagination. Lego has come along since I was a little girl they now make real looking cars, star wars figures, Indian Jones and much more. Advantages: Good building toy
Disadvantages: little pieces hurt when you stand on them :-{ ouch

The Lego creator box 6161 is a great starter, or continuation box. At the Lego shop http://shop.lego.com/Product/?p=6161 this toy costs £9.91. I suspect in the Amazon add they have got the wrong picture and number of the box with the price 19.99 the bigger box number 6166 costs 19.99p, The Lego comes in a sturdy deep rectangular blue box with a lid. I know from experience what an advantage it is to have a good sturdy box to keep Lego in. It keeps all the Lego together in one place. Keeps Lego away tidily. The card boxes break fairly easily. Much easier to have a big tub for your child to put all the Lego pieces in. Remember do encorage your child to pick them all up they are painful to stand on with bare feet.
