First impressions

I am sure that when you look at the Lego range you will get the impression that they are aimed at young boys. The colours and subjects indicate this, though they are unisex to some extent. The main target audience is young boys, and this is fair enough as they are most likely to want to build these sets. This isn’t a sexist comment, but it is well worth mentioning that there are also plenty of young girls that want to play with building blocks, and when it comes to Lego they are limited with the range of sets aimed at the girls.

What we have here is a Lego set from the ‘Friends’ range. This is a range clearly aimed at young girls, with the boxes they come in mainly pink and purple, and with the same colours used in the theme of the sets. We have shops and stables, and subjects you would typically expect girls to prefer. You won’t see so many sets with racing cars in them, but Lego have done their research and know what girls want from their Lego sets, and what we have here is a product of that research.

The set here is called ‘Downtown Bakery’ and it does exactly what it says on the box. We have a brightly coloured bakery, complete with accessories and minifigures. This is a set that could easily be played with by girls AND boys, but it is clear to see that Lego have targeted girls with this range.

My experience

The set we have is of a fair size. We have a total of 253 pieces, but this isn’t actually all that many when you compare it to other Lego sets. I was therefore surprised to see the size of the set once built, with the bakery taking up many of these pieces.

In the set we have 2 minifigures and these are of Danielle (blondie) and Mia (brunette) and these are 2 of the Friends range characters. With what they are wearing it would be fair to say that Mia is running the bakery and her friend Danielle is visiting her. We have the bakery which is complete with a wide range of accessories and machines inside. Externally we have flower planters and a basket of French bread sticks. We have brightly coloured canopies and uncluttered windows to allow us to see inside the bakery. The shop is very well presented, and we have additional items also worth mentioning. There is an oven which looks rather compact, but for it to fit in with the set it has to be. Mia has a range of accessories to allow her to bake her bread in the oven, and we also have a display unit with various pastries on and in it.

Construction time will vary from child to child. It all depends on their ability, but within 20 minutes a competent child will have completed the set, ready for play. The obligatory glossy instructions are easy enough to follow, but once the shop is built you may find a child wishing to just follow the picture on the box to complete the other items, with most of the pieces now used up. Mia has access to a phone and cash register, and these items are what the instructions are for, as they are not displayed clearly on the box images.

Again, I will reiterate that I was surprised to see that we have just 253 pieces in this box, with so much going on and the finer details are present that you find on most Lego sets of this sort. Once completed you will see that the shop stands at 10cm in height and is approximately 20cm across. This is a reasonable sized set, and it fits in with other Friends sets in terms of its scale.

Price and availability

This set was available in the Lego range for just over a year, though you can still buy the set ‘as new’ if you shop around online. Expect to pay around the £15 mark for this set in boxed condition, with sets in good used condition commanding around the £10 mark. Auction websites and sites such as Gumtree are the best places to look for older Lego sets, but this set is modern enough to be widely available from a range of sources.

Final thoughts

Overall this is a fun set and well worth the price tag if your child is into this sort of thing. These girls’ Lego sets are obviously not as popular as the boys’ stuff, but they still have a place in the range, and Lego would not produce these sets if they weren’t viable.

This is a bright and colourful set, and is a great introduction into Lego building for a girl. Yes, all Lego sets are unisex, but with the pink and purple boxes and predominantly female characters in each set it is clear that the Friends range is designed to encourage young girls to play with Lego sets.
