What is it about girls and horses? I remember as a child myself being completely captivated by these creatures (probably because, despite the fact we lived on a farm, my Dad constantly told us that we categorically could NOT have a horse - something to do with them wrecking fences and not earning their keep!!) and our girls seem to have inherited this fascination.
At not quite three, they are still a bit young for horse riding, but they were delighted to receive this Lego Duplo box of equine delights as a gift.
This is a relatively new product - it was only launched in 2007.
It contains a good variety of pieces - stable building, fences, horses, little people, pony trap, a cat, a trough and "standard" building blocks.
The stable itself consists predomiantly of a large roof piece, two gable ends and two walls - so there are not hundreds of complicated pieces to be slotted together and the wee ones can usually manage to construct it themselves. The stable has opening and closing doors and a window. The doors and windows are a little bit more difficult to snap into place and they normally trigger a "Mummy do it!" situation.
The set includes two horses and a pony as well as two little Lego people with moveable arms and legs that can "ride" the horses. There is also a small pony trap which can be used to transport the feed and other blocks with a small person "driving".
The inclusion of a cat, a trough, a bunch of carrots, a trophy and fences/jumps further adds to the play value of the set.
Lego produce toys that are brilliant for encouraging imaginative play. The pictures on the box do give a selection of scenario possibilities but I do find that our two tend to do their own thing most of the time. It is always one of those "Aww, cute!" moments when I find them chatting away to themselves or singing "Horsey, horsey" while they are playing with this.
The fact that there are two little Lego people and three horses does mean that there are sufficient components to keep more than one child occupied (although the solitary pony trap has been at the centre of controversy on more than one occasion!)
With 36 pieces in total in this set it provides plenty of variety and possibilities - but it does not present too onerous a task when trying to round it all up at night! The box it comes in is pretty sturdy too and we are still storing our set in the original packaging. It is made of cardboard so it can be recycled eventually.
Recommended for ages 2-5, there are no tiny pieces to worry about (if you have younger babies - or a hoover!) and because it is part of Lego's Duplo range the parts are that bit bigger and easier to slot together. And Lego is so durable (how many of us still have some lurking around from our childhood?)
This was a gift to our girls, but it was purchased from Toymaster in Inverness for £24.99. It is available new on Amazon at the same price (delivered free in the UK with Super Saver Delivery) and it is also currently available on Ebay from £24.95 (also with free delivery)
I must admit, initially I thought it was expensive for what it was, but in retrospect we have definitely had good value out of this particular toy. We have had this set for almost a year now and its appeal does not seem to have waned much at all.
No batteries or irritating sounds….And no getting up at six am to muck out!!
Conclusion…..recommended!!!
Other sets in this range include: 4972 - Farm animals (RRP £7.99) 4973 - Combine harvester (RRP £17.99) 4975 - Farm (RRP £29.99)

Please note that I have had to select age 3-5 as the age group in the criteria specifics as there isn't an option for ages 2-5.
Lego in and around the stables is a good addition to the Lego collection for a horse mad child. This Lego build is a Duplo Lego toy so it's suitable for a child aged 2 to 6 years old. This of course depends on your child maturity and often a younger and older child will enjoy this toy. Duplo Lego bricks are larger than a standard Lego they are compatible two 8 stud Lego bricks fit on a 4 stud Duplo brick.
This Duplo collection has a horse stable ... ...are some green basic duplo Lego bricks and a brown brick, the brown brick has a picture of apples on it I guess it's really a box containing apples for the horses. A water trough for the horses to drink from too. The prize cup for the winning horse is silver colored. Then there is the farm cat too a duple cat to watch the actions.
There are enough bricks here to make a good home stable for the horses your child practicing their fine and gross motor ...
