---Introduction---
I have been bought up on Lego from the age of three of four. I have always retained my love of Lego and over the years, I have compiled a large amount of different Lego. I have had everything from towns to spaceships and trains to Star Wars Lego. I always wanted to be a Lego designer from a young age, as I used to build my own models from pieces of Lego from different sets.
In the last few years, I have bought a lot of Star Wars Lego, because it is Lego and I absolutely love Star Wars. I have every Lego Technic model available in the Star Wars theme and many others. In this review, I will talk about the AT-AT walker, that can be seen in the original Star Wars films, on the snow planet of Hoth.
---About the AT-AT---
The AT-AT walker, or the All Terrain Armored Transport, is a four-legged fighting vehicle but is also used as a transport for Imperial Speeder Bikes.
The walkers stand a massive 15 meters tall and that in itself is enough to frighten the Rebel Army. Its sheer size makes it look like a formidable weapon in the heat of the battle. The AT-AT is designed and produced at the Kuat Drive Yards on behalf of the Imperial Forces.
An AT-AT has blast-impervious armor plating and looks very much like a gigantic beast as it moves across the battlefield. An AT-AT's head carries the main weaponary on the vehicle. A pair of light blasters are located on what would be the temples of a human being. There more powerful twin laser cannons are mounted in the chin area.
The command crew pilots the AT-AT from the walker's head, which is connected to the main body by a flexible neck. The crew consists of a commander, a gunner, and a pilot. Additional crews and troops can be carried in the walker's main storage bay which is has a very large capacity. They also carry Snow Speeder's, which are adapted versions of the Speeder Bikes used on other planets.
Due to the heavy armour on the AT-AT, they are very difficult to bring down using conventional weaponary. The Rebel Snowspeeder's, have found an effective way to bring them down, taking advantage of their lack of mobility. They use their towropes and wrap them around all four of the walkers legs. Once the tension of the rope is high enough, the rope is cut and the walker drops to the floor. Luke Skywalker also bought a walker down, by throwing a hand propelled weapon into the main body of the vehicle, after cutting a hole with his lightsabre.
---Age Group---
Lego have placed an age group of 14+ on this particular model. I think that any children over the age of 10 or 11, will be able to build this with a little bit of help from their parents. As with all Lego models, the instructions are made very clear and easy to interpret. They are in colour and they also break each process down in to small sections. At the top of each new section, the pieces that you will need are displayed in a box and also the quantity, if you need more than one. There are a number of very small parts contained within this set, so it is wise that you don't construct this or any other Lego product in the company of babies or toddlers.
---Wear and Tear---
If you keep your Lego well, than it will last for a very long time. It is rare that individual pieces of Lego will break or snap. The main thing that happens to Lego, is that it fades after a while. If you store your Lego in a dry location, out of direct sunlight and avoid smoking near it and exposing it to any materials other than the air, it should be fine. All of my Lego, some of which is ten or twelve years old, is in prime condition. I have washed my Lego before, using a damp cloth and have been told that this helps to retain the look and colour of the pieces.
---Packaging---
The model, comes in a fairly large box. It has the name, product number and reccomended age group printed on it. There are also a number of pictures, taken from different angles. The picture on the front, shows the walker side-on with a Snow Trooper and the Snow Speeder below. In the background, the Hoth Battlefield is shown, with snow scenery. Around the edges of the box, is a space theme, with stars on a black background. The box has been well though out and planned, so the product is presented in a smart and attractive fashion.
---Value for Money---
I bought this model for £90 and it is worth every penny of that price tag. It sits proudly on the unit next to the television. It is a great talking point when family or friends come to visit. Everybody that sees it makes a comment on how much they like it. Star Wars is one of the most well known and loved trilogy of movies ever made.
If you are keen on Star Wars or Lego, or you know somebody that is, then this has to be ideal. With Lego, the smaller models are comparitively more expensive than the larger ones, so for that little bit of extra cash you get a great deal more Lego. You get over 1000 pieces with this model, so it works out at less than 1p per piece of Lego. This will be the centrepiece of your Lego or Star Wars collections and it is a stunning item to own.
You get three mini-figures included in the price. There is a driver who looks like a traditional Storm Trooper, he just wears a grey suit. You also get two gunners or Snow Troopers who each have their own weapons. The two Snow Troopers are revealed, when you open the two flaps on either side of the main body area. If you pull open the three rear flaps, a Speeder Bike is revealed. You can put one of the Snow Troopers on this and send them out to pick off Rebel Troops.
The Lego ID number for this product is 4483 and it is available in all good toy shops both on the high street and on the internet.
Visit - *www.lego.com) for more Lego products and information on this AT-AT walker. You can also visit the Lego shop and purchase this item and it is currently priced at £89.99.
