"Racing good fun"

LEGO Racers was included free with my PS1. I wasn't expecting it to be much good, particularly since the registration card told me to 'ask my parents to fill it in for me' (I don't even live with my parents!). However, I was pleasantly suprised.

The game has a rather unique facility that enables you to design your own driver and car. There's plenty of bricks you can use, and each chassis handles differently from the rest. You have the opportunity to pick up more bricks as you win races later in the games.

The race tracks themselves are colourful and challenging. Each is set in a different LEGO world and you can collect 'power-ups' along the way which give you extra tricks such as turbo power, missiles and forcefields. There is an element of tactical thought involved in choosing how you use your power-ups and which ones to pick up. The handling of the cars is fairly tricky and takes a little while to pick up, but not to the extent that it becomes frustrating. There are plenty of tracks, and you unlock more as you win races at each level. You can also take part in two player racing, and special time trials that enable you to earn more bricks for your car, essential in later levels.

If there is a downside to this game, it is that it takes a little while to load between levels and screens. However, this aside it is a fast moving, challenging race game with some nice touches like 'dual shock' vibration and the build your own racer option. It is a challenging and tactical game that's easy to get into and enjoy. It makes a refreshing change from complex, violent shoot-em-ups and is well worth the £9.99 it normally retails at.
