First impressions

When we see the Lego and Star Wars brands teaming up we know that we are in for a treat. Some of the smaller sets can be frustratingly simple, but anything else in the range is worth considering, from both a collectors’ and traders’ point of view. Those that collect toys purely for their potential worth in the future will always look to the Lego Star wars ranges, though although pretty pennies are often asked for online, this doesn’t mean they are achieved. The most fun is in the construction of these sets, and not having to think about future values etc. adds to the enjoyment for me.

The set we have here is the Hoth Attack, and this was featured in the Star Wars ‘Episode V’. It is quite a modern set, but this doesn’t mean it isn’t common, and it is an interesting set because it doesn’t contain moving spacecraft as such. This is still a battle scene, and with plenty of characters involved it is going to be popular with kids that enjoy these types of scenes.

My experience

The Hoth Attack is a memorable scene from the movie, and Han Solo makes an appearance in this particular set. We have a Snowtrooper, a Hoth Rebel and an Imperial Probe Droid in the set. The first three I mentioned are much more ‘minifigure-like’ than the droid, but this is still described as such by Lego.

This set consists of a number of minifigures that I have described, in addition to the Hoth Rebel Base. The tower can be turned away from any impending attack, with the hatch closing down. There is a fire shooter to attack anyone that dares strike it, and the rebel base is the centre of this set.

With just 233 pieces in the set I was a little surprised at the description, with so many things mentioned in the set. Construction time is obviously very short, with around 20 leisurely minutes required. This is one of those sets that you must take your time with constructing, as you wouldn’t want to complete it too soon!

The instructions are simple to follow, and the glossy pages add to the quality of the set. These Lego sets must have their own instructions drawn up, and this must be a costly exercise. Nevertheless, they have put so much thought into each set of instructions.

There are flick missiles with the set, these can be fired from the tower. The Imperial Snowtrooper attacking the tower can be fought with the stud shooter, and there is a blaster pistol, blaster and a blaster rifle in the set. There are many accessories included with the minifigures, and the base is also of a good size. Measuring more than 12cm in height it is not tiny, but this is still a compact set, and is priced accordingly.

Price and availability

This set is no longer available from retailers as it is discontinued, but you will still find it online as this was as recently as last December (2016) and is therefore still found in ‘as new’ condition. Expect to pay a premium for the set, compared to an RRP of £19.99. I think this is a very reasonable cost for the set, but new sets start at this and go up and up, with sets in used condition costing from £10 on auction sites.

Final thoughts

Overall I think that this is actually one of the better Lego Star Wars sets. It may not be the largest, or the most expensive, but it offers the best value for money of the Lego Star Wars sets that I have come across. This isn’t a large set, but I think the RRP was reasonable, and if you can buy one for a tenner it is worth getting for a child interested in Star Wars.
