~~~Why Bother?~~~ The partnership between Lego and Star Wars is true genious. There is a timelessness about Star Wars that is quite amazing. The original film is enjoying its 30th anniversary and my son loves the films just as much as (maybe even more than) his Dad did at a similar age. One of the reasons for the film's success and longevity is the detailed back story that goes with it. There is a whole universe of planets, peoples, creatures, ships and weapons and a whole history of trade agreements and technology development, wars and treaties. My son has books that delve into all of this, one of the best being a Dorling Kindersley book which contains detailed cross sections of the Millenium Falcon, an Imperial Star Destroyer and the Death Star to name but a few. The detail behind the design of these 'ships' is astonishing. This whole other world is so inviting, so involving that I have had to explain to my 7 year old son that it is fiction - and he has taken some convincing!
The Lego Star Wars series of products allows you to recreate this world, to rebuild it, block by block, to gain control over your own corner of it.
~~~Before we start~~~ I've picked the TIE Interceptor to review, although the best kit my son has is the Y-wing Fighter which I don't see listed on Ciao, if you want to know why, drop me a line. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE IMAGE SHOWN ABOVE IS NOT THE TIE INTERCEPTOR, IT IS THE DEATH STAR. This retails at £249.99. My little family does NOT own this (much as we would love to)! ~~~The verdict~~~ The quality of Lego products is unquestionable. We have plenty of Lego and have always found it to be durable, the design to be good and the manufacturing of excellent quality.
The design of this, as with the other Lego Star Wars kits is excellent. The end product has an authenticity and is truly something to be proud to own. The TIE Interceptor kit is one of the smaller ones, with 212 pieces, but it still manages to look like the original, with flexible wing panels and a cockpit that opens so that you can put the TIE fighter pilot which comes with the kit, or any other Lego character you fancy to be frank, in the driving seat. I think this point about the authenticity of the design is borne out by the number of adult Lego Star Wars fans there are - you can just see this from the other reviewers on Ciao.
For younger lovers or Star Wars and Lego, the TIE Interceptor is a particularly good kit to go for, as it is relatively small and straightforward to build, but still looks great once complete. Other larger kits could be more demanding for younger builders and this is a good starter on the way up to more complex and sophisticated kits, such as the Slave I and the Y-Wing Fighter.
Lego instructions are always so clear. I've been so impressed with the way that my son has started to master more and more complex Lego models single-handed and I do feel that it is right to list this product under educational toys. The logic and attention to detail that needs to be applied to follow the instructions is a real exercise for the brain! But of course the beauty of Lego is that once you've built the model, and reconstructed your favourite Star Wars battle scenes, you can take it to bits and create your own design, which encourages creativity, but also (if it isn't overstating it) really basic construction/engineering skills!
The TIE Fighter retails at £17.99 and is available on-line at the Lego Store (www.lego.com) as well as many high street toy shops and the Lego shops if you have one near you (check out the store locator at www.lego.com). I have found that the Star Wars range is more expensive than some of the Lego's own ranges (Lego City, for example) which are just as well designed. For a Star Wars fan (or the parent of one), the extra will be well worth it just to be able to enter that amazing world and control it for a short while.
