First impressions

The Lego range has always fascinated me. As a child I moved from Lego onto Meccano, though these days a child can progress through to move advanced forms of Lego, such as the Technics range that we sample here.

The set we have here is the Lego Technic Quad Bike, and this is a 2 in 1 set. This means that 2 models can be made from the single set of pieces, though not both at the same time. This saves on the cost, both to the manufacturer and the consumer. It also means that if the odd piece is misplaced you might still be able to build the other model!

In terms of looks we have vibrant orange bodywork, perfect for a Quad Bike and a Race Buggy. Looks-wise you will have to make your own mind up once built, and I have included an image of (in my opinion) the least attractive of the 2 designs.

My experience

With 199 pieces in this set it isn’t the largest, but it is a fair sized and reasonably challenging Lego Technic set. Once completed the Quad Bike measures 11cm in height, 14cm in width and 18cm in length. This isn’t a pocket-sized toy once completed, and it will stand out due to the bright colours.

In terms of the challenge you are not going to be tested with this set unless you are a Lego Technic beginner. With an age guide of 8 to 14 years this is stretching it a bit, but I suppose it would still appeal to an older child. One of the main selling points with this particular Lego Technic set is that the Quad Bike can be turned into a Race Buggy, and you even get a separate set of instructions in order to create this different beast. The Race Buggy looks okay, but I do think it was right for Lego to use the Quad Bike wording when designing the packaging. The Quad Bike looks much more exciting, and it is more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion.

The bright orange and black works well, and with the Lego Technic sets you can see the mechanical side of the model once built. The Quad Bike has a chain on the rear drive train, and this can visibly be seen when the vehicle is moving. With realistic front and rear suspension that we can see and feel moving up and down as the vehicle moves along, a child could easily learn from this set. This is not a static set at all, and is all about action and movement.

The fact you can build 2 models from the single set gives you greater value for money and will ensure the set lasts a little longer as it keeps a child interested with the additional options available to them. They may decide to build the Quad Bike and then the Race Buggy, before they realise the Quad Bike is awesome and they dismantle the Race Buggy shortly after building it!

Price and availability

This set was introduced back in 2012 so is a fairly old model and is certainly discontinued. It is therefore not something you buy over the counter at a toy store. With an RRP of £17.99 this price can easily be beaten if you buy second hand. If you wish to buy a new, boxed model then you are going to pay a premium as Lego is a brand that people collect, and top money would be £30 on this set.

Final thoughts

Overall I am happy to recommend this product, though if you do decide to buy it you would be better off buying one in used condition. Ensure all the pieces are there, and I wouldnt advise spending more than the RRP on something that has just under 200 pieces. There are many current Lego Technic sets that could be chosen over this one, readily available in stores as we speak.
