I’ve played with Lego since I was very young and have tons of the stuff. A basket [the size of four milk crates] now sits delicately in what was my [and before, my brother’s] playroom, where we spent many happy hours.
HAPPY TIMES
Many of these happy hours were based on Lego. We would build humongous models of things ranging from the simplest of ferries to hovercrafts, and bungalows to high-towering skyscrapers – the possibilities are endless!
You see, with Lego you don’t have a toy, but instead every toy imaginable. Those innocent-looking multicoloured blocks can create anything your imagination could ever dream of and indeed, much, much more…
VARIETIES
There are many different types of Lego toys, from adventure
things with dinosaurs to electric trains. I personally really liked the train when I was young but I find it quite boring going round in circles now.
But then again it is fun tying the model people up to the track then putting the train at full speed and running the helpless person over! [I’m so mean – I suppose that comes from my evil big brother!]
There are different ranges of Lego, as well. The main three collections, which are later divided in to subcategories are System, Technic and Scala. System is my favourite as the blocks are simplest to use and there is a wide range.
SYSTEM RANGE
This is divided in to the Train, XTreme Team, Studios, City, Adventure, ResQ, Arctic, Lifeguards and of course, Harry Potter. I have all of the ResQ models – they are my favourite and great fun to play with, even if I am getting a bit old!
ResQ, pronounced Rescue, is basically like a super emergency service based on a more low-scale type Thunderbirds operation. It was created by Lego to be the emergency service that would complement the City range.
City is very simple: Everything you would find in a city really. You can get police stations, fire station, petrol stations [that my brother always loved but never got it], airports and of course houses. And the list goes on.
Adventure is practically the same as ResQ but they are less modern. They have rafts instead of boats that go at 1 knot in stead of 5! The little blokes come dressed in stylish outfits looking like Sir David Attenborough!
The train, as I’ve said can get rather boring after a while, for which reason I persuaded a friend to buy it rather than make the purchase myself, and played on his little track – and I was bored after ten minutes of watching a circling train…
Studios are the second newest range to join the Lego System collection. They are based on Spielberg films, including JP3 and others, and what happens is that you get a few cameras and a set, and create your own movie scene.
The Harry Potter range is very famous. Lego factories, in Billund, Denmark, where all Lego is made are working at full steam, 24 hours a day trying to keep up with demand for Harry Potter models in time for Christmas.
The Harry Potter range is very young, and is the newest range in the System collection. It is selling like mad as parents snap up the nine varieties of Lego models based on the Harry Potter film, including a model of Hogwart’s!
TECHNIC
There is also the Technic range of Lego. I don’t like this range; I find it ugly and uninteresting. This is designed to compete with Meccano as you are given instructions on how to make clever mechanisms…
…but Lego has failed with Technic. It sold well, but did not draw from Meccano’s fans. The Lego will always be considered to be for the more novice of the young builders and will never overtake Meccano’s genius.
SCALA
This is for girls – you expect me to write about a Lego doll’s house? Dream on. The only good bit is that they have nice, fluorescent orange pieces which can look rather good in a certain TV studio…
DUPLO
This is not Lego as such, as it is marketed under a different name. But Duplo is about twice the size of Lego and the bricks interlock perfectly. Duplo is owned by Lego and the blocks are great fun for younger ones.
Duplo sell precious few ready-to-make sets but the few that they do make are very good and some of the models are quite funny in terms of details. The Duplo collection is an absolute must for all young kids!
LEGO MEDIA
Lego now produce certain computer games. Although not as good as the bricks themselves, the computergames are pretty excellent for coming from a toy company. Several are educational, but all are fun!

SUMMARY
Lego is great fun for people of all ages, even if some of you will fail to admit it! Don’t be afraid to help your children with that model, and let your imagination run wild, and make sure you have hours of fun!
