I would just like to write a review on the benefits and/ or the downfalls of Lego, something that even at the age of 26 I do still enjoy playing with with my brother's four children - any comments, you will get a slap!
Lego are those small little bricks that no doubt will have played a part in the life of any child, at some point during their early lives. It is something that has been around for many years, as my two older brothers (being 36 and 38) both also used to play with it themselves along with their own friends - in fact, most of mine was hand downs from them!
There are many different bricks used in Lego, from rectangular bricks through to doors; windows; wheels, and even the bases on which to build your masterpieces on too have shown at the Tate Modern!
In my opinion, Lego is an excellent way of encouraging a child to harbour their creative instincts as it allows them to make and build various items. Whether it just be a simple building or a more advanced car perhaps, it allows them and gives them to opportunity to look at the detail of whatever it is that they are building. I personally was never stopped in doing this, and even now to this day my nephews and neice constantly get me to build them different things. I don't know why they don't get architects to design buildings by using Lego bricks!
As already mentioned, this is something that has been a favourite no doubt of many a child's life. There is no real age limit though on what age you can stop playing with it though, however I would strongly advise not to have it around small children due to the number of small parts.
Value for money wise, it provides hours of entertainment for no money - the only outlay that you will have is the initial cost of actually buying the Lego in, which isn't very much depending on where you buy it from. But with that said, the only Lego sets that I have seen recently in shops have been actual models of cars; bikes; helicopters etc or hospital sets (i.e. set things to build with instructions), but no actual sets of just random Lego blocks for you to use at your own leisure. However, that doesn't stop you from using the bricks in the sets as general pieces to build something else with!
Wear and tear wise, these bricks can go on for years - many of mine have even been through the washing machine! But they can get lost or stuck in various different places, or may get broken if trodden on with enough force.
All in all, I would strongly recommend any individual to look in to getting someLego for their chhild - you would be silly not to do so.
