Blackcurrant Lemsip hot drink.
We have all suffered with ‘flu and colds so far this year. As soon as I felt too awful to go out shopping I demanded someone else brave the great outdoors to buy me some Blackcurrant flavoured Lemsip. When I was a child we had these but only the lemon flavoured ones, and they really are pretty hard to drink due to the fact that the taste is truly terrible, but somewhere along the way a Blackcurrant one arrived on shop shelves and it is somewhat easier to drink, but still needs some sugar to help it down.
Reckitt Benckiser: Nope, I had never heard of them either, so went online to have a look to see what I could find out about them. And this is what it says at the top of their webpage. Reckitt Benckiser was formed late in 1999 by the merger of two of the biggest and best known household products companies in the world, Reckitt & Colman and Benckiser NV. The merged business is now the largest household cleaning company in the world.
So now we know. There is loads of other information about what else they make so I am copying the link for anyone interested in their other products.
Each sachet contains 650ml paracetamol. Well most of us know that paracetamol is a painkiller which is relatively safe so long as you stick to the dosage instructions pretty strictly.
Also 10mg phenylephrine hydrochloride. I had to look this one up because I wasn’t sure what it was and found out that it is a nasal decongestant.
If you take too much of this then the following side affects could happen.
Fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeat; headache or dizziness; increased sweating; nervousness; paleness; trembling; trouble in sleeping
Sounds pretty nasty doesn’t it? But when you ache with a cold or flu and are all stuffed up you don’t really care much about whether it is good for you or not and you don’t even really care much what it tastes like, it is just the promise of some relief from the symptoms that you want to believe in.
They also contain vitamin C which is claimed to help relieve cold and flu symptoms.
There are other ingredients which you may need to check on before taking but these are all listed on the back of tha pack so not needed here.
This is the easy bit. Just put the kettle on, tear across the top of a sachet, empty into a cup or mug, pour on boiling water, add sugar or honey to taste and drink as hot as you can bear without burning the skin off your tongue. It is as simple as that.
So what symptoms of a cold do they claim to relieve?
Headaches, body aches, blocked nose, fever and sore throats. Quite a lot really when you think about it but related symptoms so not such a big deal really.
Oh, this is harder to answer. Firstly, if you are well and just think you will try one, I wouldn’t advise it, because when you are well they taste ghastly, imagine synthetic blackcurrant flavour mixed with the bitterness of paracetamol. Yuk! But if you are feeling all fluey and can’t taste much anyway, these seem to taste refreshing and nice, fairly easy to swallow so long as you add some sugar.
Well, they do for me. Although you won’t feel any ground shaking difference you might think after half an hour or so that you can breathe just a little easier, or that you don’t ache so much all over. You might even get up and make something to eat, whether you eat it or not is immaterial, it is the fact that you are able to get up and make it and the fact that you fancy making something to eat in the first place that shows you are feeling less dreadful. If it is night time you might find that you have slept for several hours when before you couldn’t sleep for all the aches and pains and the sore dry throat and blocked nose.
Keep out of reach of children Do not give to children under the age of 12 years. Contains paracetamol, so no more than 4 sachets in 24 hours Do not take any other medication that contains paracetamol at the same time or you might incur an overdose, one of the side effects of too much paracetamol is irreversible liver damage. And believe me you don’t want that!
Below is the link to the website, which includes all the other Lemsip remedies and some good information on colds and ‘flu. There I also a children’s section with the things you can give to children.
I found some in Asda at £2.48 for ten which means they are under 25p each even though only just. Definitely worth the investment for what they do and also worth keeping a pack in the back of the cupboard just in case they are needed. They have a very long shelf life, and most families get at least one cold or 'flu thing each winter.
I can't think of anything much else to write about these, but hope if anyone has a heavy cold or a bout of 'flu then this review might be a bit helpful to them.
Advantages: Relieves Cold and Flu symptoms Disadvantages: Can have a sour taste
...dad always gave me a Lemsip and it was only Lemon flavour back then (no jokes to my age please lol) and god did I hate them with a vengeance. All my dad would say it "It will make you better girl." But with my dad watching I had no option but to drink this god awful drink down. As the years went on out came the Blackcurrant flavour versions which tasted much better, I didn't mind drinking one of them when I had a cold. They come in packs of 10 sachets ... ...a nasal decongestant. Lemsip Blackcurrant drinks can relieve headaches, body aches, blocked nose, fever and sore throats. It's hard to imagine one hot drink can actually relieve all the above. Now these can have side affects such as Fast, irregular or pounding heartbeat, headache or dizziness, increased sweating, nervousness, paleness, trembling and trouble sleeping. To make a nice hot blackcurrant drink just empty a sachet into a cup and pour on ...

Advantages: gets rid of fever, happy for while, clears throat for while Disadvantages: needs proper instructions, use loads of sachets
Every time I feel a cold coming on I reach out for the Lemsip. Iv taken it for colds since childhood. Being an adult now i guess the effects of this remedy is not as good as it use to be as now I'm taking more sachets then ever. Either that or cause I suffer PMS every time a cold comes along which makes matters worse and forever to get better. Relieves a fever, clears your throat for a while, makes you feel good for a while too an hour or so. Effective ... ...time you have nodded off and fast asleep you won't realise the medication wear off. Just pour the powder into a cup and fill it with hot water but not too much about 3/4 should do it, else you will dilute the solution too much and then its pointless.
Blackcurrant flavour makes taking this remedy bearable is it has that bitter tinge in taste. Contains:650mg Paracetamol, 10mg Phenylephrine hydrochloride and you get 10 sachets and is roughly around ...
