"Bells and whistles included for once"

From the moment I unpacked this little laptop I have been impressed. For one thing it came with a fully charged battery which is a nice touch and indeed everything about it is geared towards zero effort on the user's part. I was attracted to Lenovo because of the impressive specs for the money and reputation for reliability. A friend recommended them to me and without him I probably wouldn't have thought to go with them as all I had seen of them previously was a name on the Williams F1 car.

I originally intended to install Ubuntu Linux on this machine as it was advertised as Vista ready not as a fully installed out of the box system. I probably won't bother doing so now as most of the software you would expect to have to buy for Windows like Office is in fact included and preinstalled. Windows Vista Premium seems quite stable at the moment and I no longer feel inclined to intervene.

The list of preinstalled, ready to roll software included with the Lenovo is almost endless. We have fully functional Microsoft Office suite which includes all the usual suspects i.e Powerpoint, Word etc. There is Corel Business Centre for people who hate Office with Wordperfect, Paint Shop Pro, Quattro Pro etc. There are a number of Lenovo care utilities and a Multimedia centre and Norton AntiVirus.

Compared to my previous experience of Window$ machines this one works perfectly well so far and for once the extra work repartitioning and configuring Linux does not seem worthwhile even for all the free software. I have not seen a blue screen of death yet but whenever I open Windows Explorer it shows as not responding for a minute or so whilst it loads up which is a bit disconcerting.

The computer itself seems perfectly capable so far. I do not do many CPU hungry activities or anything involving much 3D drawing and as an office workhorse I would go as far as saying I trust it. This is more than can be said for any other Windows computer I have owned which have normally been replaced with Linux the first time they blue screened and lost data.

Externally we have 4 USB ports (I am assuming USB 2 hopefully), sound in and out, S Video out, modem and lan connectors, 1394 port and some kind of weird card drive thing I have not investigated yet.

VDU is nice and crisp with all the software features you would expect for tweaking and not one burnt out pixel!

All in all I would say a nice dependable laptop with some thoughtful touches. If you are looking for an out the box computer which does exactly what it says on the website this could be the one.

I am loathed to admit it but Vista is not nearly as annoying as I had expected. It still tries to update your software every time you log on and as usual disabling all the fancy folder effects and transparency seems to afford a little more speed. As long as I don't see a blue screen at any point we should get on just fine.
