I have owned several different ThinkPad's over the years. I have enjoyed them all and found them to be extremely useful and reliable. I knew that I wanted a decent quality portable laptop that would be suitable for all the basics.
I have been using the laptop mainly for office related items such as documents and spreadsheets but have also been using it to store and edit photographs and videos. So far I have had no problems and that fact that it comes with a media card reader was very useful.
This version of the ThinkPad is pretty similar to the rest of the laptops in the series. There is little to no distortion with the screen and it is fairly bright and gives a high quality picture. I couldn't find any problems with the laptop as a whole, nothing is loose or flex's for the most part.
The R61 has pretty much all the ports you would expect a laptop to have. There are three USB ports on the notebook, audio ports, a wireless switch, a VGA port and a two gigabyte ethernet port. There is also a four in one card reader which is very very useful, as it can read SD cards which I use a lot.
The only problem that I could find with the this laptop is the wireless can be a bit of a problem. It might not work with some modems and routers. But it does pick up signal strength a bit better than some other notebooks in the series.
The battery life is very good and you can choose to switch on "battery stretch" which will let the battery life run even longer. Another plus is that the noise is not a problem at all. It is very quiet overall and doesn't even pick up much when running lots of programs and processes. Surprisingly it doesn't get very hot so you can quite easily use it on your lap without any problems.
Overall I love the new laptop and think its well worth the money. If you want a good portable laptop. It can run all your basic programs and is perfect for browsing and instant messaging. If you want a laptop for labor intensive stuff like major editing or rendering then this might not be for you but if you want a casual notebook then this is pretty much one of the best choices.

Good review - I support many of these at work. The wireless can be a right pain. Also one drawback not mentioned is the weight of the laptop. I dont like them simply cos of that! Mark
