For a student, the <$500 SL500 was a great deal. I've had it for 3 years and the only problems I've had were entirely my fault. I've stepped on it, dropped it, kicked it, and although it looks a little beat up, it's still working at 85% the efficiency it was at when I got it. Even though it's clearly breaking a sweat, it can run even the most advanced chemistry and neuroscience programs reasonably well.
