It was plug and play as the "Removable Disc" icon came up straight away when I plugged the reader via the cable supplied into my PC.

I had been tired of fiddling around connecting my Fuji digital camera to a lead from the back of my PC so I bit the bullet and bought the Lexar reader.
Windows XP does not require the CD that comes with the unit (though all other Windows OS do).
It was plug and play as the "Removable Disc" icon came up straight away when I plugged the reader via the cable supplied into my PC.
I inserted the SmartMedia card from my Fuji camera into the reader and hey presto, the images were transfered at a remarkable 450 Mbps (Megabits per second) via the ultra fast USB 2.0 connection.
The beauty of the device is that it sits on your desk beside your monitor, or wherever you choose to put it.
Inserting the memory cards is straightforward as the instruction leaflet tells you which type of memory card fits into each of the three slots ((MultiMedia, SD and Memory Stick all go into the top left hand slot: xD and SmartMedia go into the top right hand slot; and the large bottom slot is for CompactFlash). The picture at the beginning of this review shows the unit with a CompactFlash card in the bottom slot.
The design of the unit is quite elegant and very functional. The Blue front edge is a plastic hinged flap that pulls down through 90 degrees to become an almost full width stand. This exposes the slots and raises the unit to a good angle to insert the memory cards.
A word of warning here: the cards do require an amount of force to push them fully home, but apply the force gently and evenly until the card is right in. You will know it is right when your computer recognises the memory and starts importing the images.
The unit is easily detachable and easily portable being about 3 inches wide, two inches deep and half an inch high. It weighs next to nothing and will slip into your pocket with ease.
The USB connection is on the left hand side near the back of the device and the unit has two LEDS which flash when it is transferring information to your machine.
A neat final touch is the two rubber gripping pads underneath to stop it sliding on polished surfaces, but you will still need to hold it firmly with one hand whilst you insert the memory card with the other.
Mine works perfectly and I am very happy with it.
With the multiplicity of digital cameras out there and with the likelihood that I am going to upgrade mine shortly (no doubt to one with a different memory card!) I am really pleased that I bought this useful little device.
It does not need external power - it is powered by the USB 2.0 connection, and importantly, it saves on your camera batteries which are drained by direct connection to a PC.
