I have two Lexmark inkjet printers. One (Z605 model) is mine; the other (Z35) is on loan to me in connection with my degree course. Luckily, both printers use the same ink cartridges. These are:
Z16/Z17 - black Z26/Z27 - colour
The same ink cartridges are compatible with a range of Lexmark inkjet printers, notably:
Lexmark Colour Jetprinters - Z13, Z23e, Z25, Z25L, Z33, Z34 Lexmark Colour Jetprinters - Z515, other Z600 series Lexmark All-In-Ones - X72, X74, X75, X1100 series
**** So, what about buying the Z16 cartridges? ****
They come in a nice, neat little pack. The Z16 code is prominently displayed, as is a full list of the compatible Lexmark printers. So, no need to remember the cartridge code if you have committed your printer model to memory.
**** What do they cost? ****
An arm and a leg!! No seriously, Z16's retail at a rrp of £23.71 each. Cheaper deals are available (e.g. via http://www. cartridgepeople at £41.98 for two, inclusive of delivery). I usually buy at my local Tesco, paying anything from £18 to £22.
**** Installation? ****
On my Z605 and Z35 - very easy. Lexmark help by coding black cartrides with dark green tops and colour ones with light green. It's just a case of "clicking out" the exhausted cartridge and popping in the new one. The software does the rest. With Lexmark software you have to click on "is it a new cartidge/ has it been used before?" . This has never posed me problems.
**** How do they perform? ***
Well the print quality is excellent. Good definition (I use it mostly for straightforward text). The ink dries quickly, meaning that pages can be handled as soon as they are ejected from the printer.
**** Other stuff you need to know? ****
Well the pack info is excellent, but there is always http://lexmark.com - a mine of technical information.
**** Value for money? ****
Pretty poor, I'd say. Paying £20+, I'm only getting about 600 pages of black print. This does not compare too favourably with my previous printers (an Epson and an HP - both of which used infintely cheaper cartridges.
**** Other options? ****
Lexmark sell a moderate use black inkjet cartridge (the Z17). Don't go for this. Its rrp is £17.10 anc contains less than half of the ink of a Z16.
I gather that reconditioned (i.e. refilled) Z16's are available. I have never tried these, so cannot vouch for them.
However, I have recently started refilling Z16's myself. It is easy (I have been using a Tesco Value refill kit priced at £4.97 and it gives 3+ refills).
Refilling Z16's is not too messy (you have to first enlarge the hole at the top of the cartridge, but this is not tricky), and injecting the ink is straightforward. Refilled cartridges work magnificently!
**** My verdict? ****
Buy the Z16's. If you're made of money - replace them. If you're not - then refill them!
