We desperately needed a new printer last year, so in October 2002, we toddled off to PC World to inspect the available printers. As it was to be used mainly for work and school, the cost of ink cartridges didn't really matter to us so we were just after something cheap, reliable and suitable for both PC and Mac.
Looks and Set-Up ================
The Lexmark Z25 caught our eyes fairly quickly as it was one of the cheapest available - about £30 at the time. We played with the display model and decided it was reasonably sturdy and attractive, compared with some of the others in its price range. The support for the paper (as it's manual loading) folds down over the printer but when erect can certainly support quite a hefty amount of paper. The support for printed paper output is a bit wobbly and I wouldn't recommend it to be left protruding without a surface beneath it, but it is no flimsier than that of similar printers. When both supports are retracted and pushed into the printer, it looks very neat and compact.
There are only two buttons to fuss over; one for the power (on/off) and one for the paper feeder, which is really of optional use as you can "resume printing" i.e. force the feeding from your computer instead of pressing this button. There are two slots at the back of the printer for the power cable and the USB cable. Very straight-forward, and therefore ideal for the non-technical minded.
When you first set up the printer, you have to install the software from the CDROM. It works with both PC and Mac and is very quick to install - we have tested it with both Win 2000/XP and Mac OS 9; it is also compatible with machines running Linux but we don't have any ourselves. After installing the software, you can do all the traditional fidgeting - adjusting the print settings, printing "test" pages, etc. It can seem a bit trying when switching between computers because it asks you to check these settings each time you do so, however, you can just ignore this as the settings will obviously have not changed since you last set them up. Remember to use the same USB port each time, or you'll be tricked into installing the printer twice over.
It Talks! =========
The first time you print something using your new Lexmark, you will probably get a bit of a shock! A loud, patronising American voice appears to boom out of nowhere advising you that printing is occuring. Then, should you have the misfortune to have no paper ready, the voice will immediately start to scold you and insist that you put some paper in the feeder! To be honest, it can make you feel a bit rebellious and you may start to shout at your printer in an unreasonable tone of voice but after a few times, you do get used to it. If you don't, you can always opt to turn the voice off.
The actual printing isn't too slow but you probably won't be happy if you have several pages to print. If it's more than about 10-15 pages you will probably find yourself toddling off in search of a coffee while you wait. Plus, if you have to print double-sided sheets, you will have all the bother of turning the paper round half-way through the printing. However, if it's a straight-forward print job, you'll slop your coffee down your front after the printer booms out its notice that the printing is completed.
After the initial novelty wore off, I did think the voice was a bit annoying. However, on reflection, if you work at home, it's probably the only "person" you may hear all day so it isn't that unwelcome. (Sad or what?)
Running Costs =============
The initial outlay, beyond the printer itself, will be a USB cable - the printer comes with a power cable and software. It seems to accept most types of paper, so you may please yourself as to what weight you choose to use. You will probably find that your printer comes with a free cartridge but you should probably buy a couple yourself; you must get both black and colour cartridges.
Annoyingly enough, you can't seem to get generic compatible cartridges, so you must shell out for Lexmark cartridges which are shockingly expensive. As I said before, the cost of ink cartridges wasn't an issue for us but you may want to think carefully about buying cartridges which are almost as expensive as your printer - you can expect to pay about £22-£25 for a standard cartridge. Moderate/light use cartridges are available but they are a false economy - they are basically half-full cartridges and you only save about £5 compared with the cost of standard cartridges. However, if you are on a tight budget there are refill kits available for about half the cost of the cartridges; a bit fiddly in my opinion but maybe of use to some people. We get through cartridges about every 3 months but we do quite a lot of printing; a light home user would probably manage to double that time. So, it's not as expensive as it seems!
Over All ========
The Lexmark Z25 is a neat little model, which produces reasonable quality printing. It's not suitable for high resolution pictures but text and simple graphics print very nicely. For speed, it's not the fastest machine in the world but it can certainly take a *lot* of abuse. We're certainly happy with our Z25 and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Lexmark in the future. I believe this particular model is no longer widely available but if you can get one, I would certainly recommend it for either your first printer, home users or light business users. If you can't get this particular model, I would suggest looking at any of the low budget Lexmarks, as they are all fairly similar.

Lexmark Z25L
I recently resigned from my job in a multi-national company to take up a position in a local franchise with only a few staff members. What does this have to do with writing an op about a printer? Simply that, once I had resigned, it occurred to me that I would no longer be able to use company printers and paper to print off my personal letters. Let’s be honest, in an office of 50 or so people, you can get away with printing personal ... ...though, I came across the Lexmark Z25L. A cheap colour printer, small, lightweight and fairly fast.
The printer itself is connected to the PC via a USB cable, which is perhaps the only downfall of the whole purchase, insomuch that the cable is not supplied, adding an extra £15 to the cost of purchase if you don’t have a spare one indoors.
The printer itself comes in a pack that contains a colour cartridge, though the printer can actually hold both ...

...very old, very well used Lexmark printer finally gave up the ghost. Typical! As a student, I quickly found that a printer was an essential, but I obviously didn't have shedloads of cash to splash out on a top of the range one. So, I headed off to my nearest PC World with the single aim of buying the cheapest (and I do mean the VERY cheapest) printer they had in stock. This just happened to be the Lexmark Z25 - a snip at a very measly £30. It came ... ...an eventual trip to the Lexmark website before he could get the printer working in the first place. Oh, and just incase you think that he's obviously a complete moron who wouldn't know a printer driver from a potted plant, can I just explain that he's actually a computer software developer by trade! Setting up a poxy little printer shouldn't have been a problem for him, but I've since heard from several other Lexmark owners (and not just this model ...

Advantages: Initially very cheap. Disadvantages: Expensive in the long run, duff paper feeder.
...that attracted me to the Lexmark Z25L is that it is one of the cheapest Inkjet printers around. Being a poor student at the time the printer was an obvious way to save some money. I have to say that after parting with my money I had some reservations, after all a printer that costs less than £25 must have some faults I just hoped that they weren't that major.
The manufacturers inform you that that the printer prints at 9 pages per minute (ppm) in ... ...new printer and that the Lexmark Z25L needed to be put to rest. As it turned out it ended up in the hands of my brother who used it for his college work. After another month of use however, it packed up completely and refused to take even one piece of paper through.
All in all I would have to say that this printer is just not worth purchasing. Apart from the low price it simply has nothing good going for it. High running costs combined with poor ...

The Lexmark Z25
After my old inkjet printer died painfully and expensively it was time for me to purchase another. Being quite naïve I just thought I just though that a printer was a printer. I was really looking for the cheapest printer around and this puppy turned up for £22.50.
I snapped it up and home it came, only to find that it came with the software but no cable to connect it to you computer.
I popped back to the shop bought myself a USB ... ...installing the software no problem. Then it come to printing a test sheet and yes you guessed it no print cartridges!
Back to the shop – who don’t sell them off to Office World £24.99 for the black 27.99 for the colour!
So in total
£22.50 = printer
£7.99 = USB cable
£24.99 = black cartridge
£27.99 = colour cartridge
So much for my cheap printer in total it cost me £83.49
As you can imagine I’m well chuffed and thinking to myself this printer ...

Before buying this machine we tried 2 other machines (2 x Canon S200) but it was hassle from the beginning. Both machines had different problems. We phoned the support line and they thought it was because our USB connectivity was via a PCI card and that our machine couldn't handle their printer. We aren't techs so do not know if this is true and didn't want to call anyone in so then picked up this Z25.

I have two Lexmark inkjet printers. One (Z605 model) is mine; the other (Z35) is on loan to me in connection with my degree course. Luckily, both printers use the same ink cartridges. These are:

The same ink cartridges are compatible with a range of Lexmark inkjet printers, notably:
LexmarkColourJetprinters - Z13, Z23e, Z25, Z25L, Z33, Z34

They come in a nice, neat little pack. The Z16 code is prominently displayed, as is a full list of the compatible Lexmark printers. So, no need to remember the cartridge code if you have committed your printer model to memory.
