...Introduction
LexmarkE 330, a workgroup monochrome laser printer, is my main printer at my workplace. With the size of around one foot in all dimensions (Width: 39.6 cm X Depth: 35.3 cm X Height: 24.9 cm), the printer can be placed almost everywhere in the office; on a tables, cupboards, shelves, or else. It is a network printer which surpassed 40,000 pages right now, so, I have many things to review about!!
Installation and Setup
On the very first day if my use, I've used it as my personal printer. The driver for LexmarkE 330 is included in the package which I found it can easily be installed. You can plug it in USB or parallel port as you like. After that, the printer had to be installed in the network which was beyond my responsibility. The IT staff was there to set it up. I watched them and realised that...

Advantages: Built-in network print server, fast printing, fairly low cost, support for Linux Disadvantages: Non-trivial, but not impossible, network installation under Windows XP
...for this printer. When I spoke to them, they didn't think they could, but they may be able to in the future. This was at first a major problem for me, as Lexmark consumables are notoriously expensive. However, after reading up on it a bit, I find that Lexmark offer a 'Returns Program' toner, which is priced at a reasonable level, with the condition that the toner be sent back to them after use, presumably to compete with the likes of Cartridge World.
As I have mentioned, the main requirement for me was that the printer supported Linux, and this one does. It also supports:
- Windows 98SE,ME,2000,XP,XP64,Server 2003
- Mac OS 9,10.2,10.3,10.4
- Linux (as mentioned)
The system requirements vary between systems, but are not unreasonable.
The final requirement for me was that the printer support easy networking. This printer does indeed support...

**** Other stuff you need to know? ****
Well the pack info is excellent, but there is always http://lexmark.com - a mine of technical information.
**** Value for money? ****
Pretty poor, I'd say. Paying £20+, I'm only getting about 600 pages of black print. This does not compare too favourably with my previous printers (an Epson and an HP - both of which used infintely cheaper cartridges.
**** Other options? ****
Lexmark sell a moderate use black inkjet cartridge (the Z17). Don't go for this. Its rrp is £17.10 anc contains less than half of the ink of a Z16.
I gather that reconditioned (i.e. refilled) Z16's are available. I have never tried these, so cannot vouch for them.
However, I have recently started refilling Z16's myself. It is easy (I have been using a Tesco Value refill...

I bought his printer because my old printer had finally decided not to take cartridges any more, and I needed to print urgently.
I decided that I wanted a laser printer, as the bulk of the printing that I did was black and white, and mostly text.... more
