Full review
At the risk of sounding like I hark to the good ol’ days, when I was first getting into personal computers a little over a decade ago, IBM ruled. They produced machines with little thought to the looks but which compared to other companies, lasted well and did the business. This is what they were, solid business machines. The adage that went around ‘nobody ever got fired for buying IBM’ was testimony to their quality of build but certainly not their looks.

History changes so fast these days it can be difficult to keep up. I still remember pictures on the news of the Balkan states at war and here I am seriously considering a package holiday there this summer. Lexmark used to be a subsidiary company of IBM and I don’t know if history has changed that link. Certainly IBM are nowhere near the force they once were. However, the Lexmark range does carry a quality that no doubt stems from the historical link with IBM.

I have owned and used Lexmark printers often in the last ten years and this one is a relatively recent acquisition purchased specifically to print out digital photographs. Our network at work links to a superb colour laser printer (also reviewed here) but geographically our site is so spaced out that some poor mites have to traipse across a windy and wet walkway to retrieve their printed output. Hence, the call for a cheap but reasonable quality inkjet printer to be placed at the other end of the site and enable quick and easy printing of digital images stored on camera media.

Let’s be honest – the market for inkjet printers aimed at those that went a quick and fair quality digital photograph printing is completely saturated. I bought this Lexmark for three reasons:
1. It was fairly sturdy plastic and felt like it could survive the daily rigour of use by children.
2. It was a reasonable price - £84.99 but now far cheaper.
3. It was a name I trust.

Let’s take a look at the details of this printer and equip the potential purchaser with the information they need to compare with other similar priced models and make a purchasing decision.

THE TECHNICAL BIT
This is an A4 printer and I’m reading from the manual here to share the print speeds.
17 ppm black draft.
10 ppm colour draft
This obviously means little as most people buying this printer will have similar plans for it as I did. It is a fair paced printer for digital imaging and we do most of our printing on the medium as opposed to highest setting as this conserves ink. The quality is acceptable at this setting and an A4 full colour photograph takes a little over one minute to print.
The maximum resolution for colour is 4800dpi X 1200dpi. Remember with resolution, the bigger the numbers the better the quality. Now, anything over 1200 X 1200 is exceptional quality but as with all inkjet printers in this price range this figure is slightly suspect as Lexmark have a technology which enhances the resolution of the image without actually delivering 4800 dots per inch. What this means in reality is that the image resolution numbers should be ignored. You really need a trip to PC World and look at these inkjet printers and their output to compare. The Lexmark enhancement technology is different from the Hewlett Packard one which is … you get the picture. In essence they do the same thing and it does appear to work fine. On an A4 image you will see the dots close up but if you are standing a step back from the image in a frame or mount you would see something that was acceptable as photo quality output.

MEDIA
The advantage of inkjet printers is the range of media that they print on without complaining. You can shove pretty much anything in here and it will print to the same quality. The only one that appears to suffer is transparencies where for some reason the image appears to loose some of the colour accuracy and vibrancy and also look slightly grainy in comparison to the high quality of prints on other media. Media the manual says are supported include:
Envelopes, transparencies, plain paper, glossy paper, index cards, cards, photo postcards, iron on transfer paper, labels.
The setting for the media is easily accessed through the included software which installed easily and worked perfectly every time.

THE SOFTWARE AND INSTALL
The software included will run on Mac OS 9.0.4 or later, Mac OS X, Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. The XP install is a dream but Windows 98 and ME owners I expect you will have to follow instruction in the manual as my own experience is that these operating systems can throw up problems when installing hardware. The manual included with the printer is excellent. Easy to follow and clear with diagrams where needed and there is the now almost obligatory colour poster in the box showing you how to connect your printer in case you have been left permanently damaged by that lobotomy.

PRINT FROM CARD
This is great. I know it is quite common now but this was the first printer I bought that had this feature and it really is useful. You slot in the memory card from the camera and easily select and print the images. You need to check on the camera LCD screen for which number images you want to print but it works every time.

OVERALL
After about six months of use this machine is still going strong having never needed repairing or thrown up any problems. It is probably the least troublesome printer we have at work, I don’t even get called to unjam paper from this one. The quality is fine, especially considering the price and the colour vibrancy on plain or glossy paper is a particular strong point.
The ink cartridges are slightly cheaper than the HP ones I have to buy for my home printer so I have no problem recommending this printer to friends. If you want a workhorse printer for printing pages and pages of mainly black text then the emphasis on photo printing may be overkill but if you do have the need to print digital images and are on a budget then this is a good buy. Take a look alongside other similar models and I think you will agree it fares well.
History may have changed but Lexmark still have the IBM trademark of quality and whats more the looks seem to have improved with time.

Thanks for taking the time to read this opinion and I look forward to reading your comments - Phil

Advantages: not to bad quality, doesnt use to much ink
Disadvantages: price of ink as always !

...I had an old lexmark some years ago and wasnt to impressed with its quality or speed only good thing was its price tag. This is a photo quality version and uses two ink cartridges so will cost you more to replace ! a little tip is to not place the photo cartridge in unitl you actually need to do photo printing as it can still use the ink if your not careful. (only downside to that is if you use up the normal cartridge to fast, you end up with one ...
...photo print is actually not bad and i was suprised at the colour range (the extra cartridge helps) it comes with token photo paper matt and shiny, and came with the two cartridges ! always check if it has ink before the salesman tries to sell you extra ! it is an easy to install usb printer (doesnt come with usb lead) and has a control centre to help you with cleaning the heads etc and it even speaks to you to tell you its printing and when its ... Advantages: Speaks to you, ease of use
Disadvantages: Ink price, speed

Well, its a printer. Looks - well the standard thing but you are able to get an advantage with this, as it comes with a slot for all of the small cards (compact flash, SD memory, etc) I have found this very handy as it saves my putting on into my machine. Installation is easy as it uses USB and the same for the manual, very helpful. I have found no problems with them. The software installation is easy as well. The advantage this printer has is ...
..."printing started" and "printing finished" in an american voice. I find this useful and then again anoying if your printing a lot. Ink for this thing is pricey, so wouldn't really recommend it, but then again would due to the fact it's a good printer. The ink does last in these things, but then it depends on what your printing and how much your printing. The help facility on this is great, as it tells you how to configure it for photo's. Review of Lexmark P 707 Photo Jetprinter by sinclairlouis

Advantages: Bright, Vibrant Colours when printing photos
Disadvantages: Horribly slow print speeds both on "quick" speed and "detailed"

I purchased this printer several months ago because of its amazingly low price and high quality prints. However, after a very easy set-up (plug + play) I realised that maybe I had made the wrong choice going for a cheapy one because of the literally snail speed printing even though it is connected to a top of the range computer. I mean, for a black and white document with a few colour images it takes about 3 minutes, which on a 10 page document is ...
...x 1,200 dpi colour resolution -Up to 17 ppm black printing, 10 ppm color -Stylish modern design, retractable output tray -USB interface, optional Ethernet; PC and Mac compatible So, as I mentioned earlier, these specs appear to be slightly wrong - its either that or I just got a duff model! However I have to admit that it does look rather stylish, and it can, after all, automatically select the best print quality by sensing the paper type! ... Read review

Advantages: Good quality print and added extra of a card reader
Disadvantages: Ink is very expensive

I purchased this printer about a year ago, from Dixons for a very reasonable price of £59.99 on a special deal when I purchased a new Laptop, It looked a very good deal at the time, there was the addition of the card reader and the performance speed of print. However it was the price that swayed me, but now looking on a year later I think that this was not such a good thing. Overall the printer is excellent good functionality and quite a good DPI ...
...would be the cost of maintence, even though the machine was cheap to buy, the overall running costs of buying new ink is very high with cartridges costing over £25 each, they where only lasting me about 2 months so really not such a great deal. Personally I do not recommend this printer as there are better cheaper ones on the market, maybe look at such manufactures as cannon as these offer great value for money and excellent print quality. ...
