I bought this printer as I needed a device that could handle scanning, photocopying and printing and which would also take up minimum space. I wasn't disappointed. The printer cost only £39.99 from Argos as part of a pre-Christmas deal.
When I came to install it, the first thing I noticed was that there were no instructions to speak of. What I did find in the box was a large piece of paper with several pictures on. You're supposed to follow the instructions in order to install the printer. For most people this wouldn't be a problem, and they could probably leave the instructions to one side and manage on their own. However, for those of us that aren't computer-savvy, Lexmark could have provided a better means of instructing how to install it.
Installation was easy, with or without the instruction leaflet. Just plug and play, basically. One problem that I encountered halfway through the installation process, however, was the fact that the printer does not come with a USB cable to link it to your computer. Luckily I had a spare, but had I not, the installation would have had to have been halted while I nipped to the shops. The fact that there was no USB cable included was not mentioned anywhere, either in the catalogue or on the box, so potential buyers - make sure you have your own cable!
A big advantage of the printer is that it comes complete with two free ink cartridges, one black and one colour. These can be easily installed by just lifting up the top of the printer and slotting them into place.
At the end of the installation process, I was asked if I wanted to print out a test page. I did so, and was pleasantly suprised at the quality of the printout. Printing was relatively fast and very quiet.
Installation complete, it was time to test out all the functions. There are several handy buttons on the top of the printer, giving you instant access to the different capabilities of the printer - colour copying, black & white copying, and scanning an image into your computer. If you choose the latter, the Lexmark printing "All-in-One Center" opens, giving you more options as to what to do with your scanned image. Images can be attached to an email, printed off or edited and saved for another time. The software is very simple to use, and so far I have found no problems.
One thing I was a little disappointed in was the fact that the x1270 is not a stand-alone copier, as I had initially thought. For the photocopying function to work, the printer still has to be linked up to your computer. But to be honest, I think that was my fault, having not read the description in the catalogue properly.
The ink cartridges that come with the printer are numbers 17 (black) and 27 (colour). I use the printer regularly, and my black cartridge ran out the other day. During printing, an option pops up enabling you to connect to the Lexmark website and order more ink. I did this, and having compared the prices with other stores, found that it was cheaper to use the Lexmark site. I ordered a twin pack of number 17s, and they arrived the very next day!! They also came with a bag for you to post back your used cartridge to Lexmark, who then in turn send money to an organisation to help African poverty. The bag was freepost, and so this is an easy way to get rid of your used ink cartridges.
All in all, this printer is very good at what it does. Printing, scanning and copying are all just a touch of a button away, and time after time, the x1270 produces high quality prints. This printer is perfect for those of you who need an all-in-one machine for a very reasonable price.
Advantages: Easy to use. Disadvantages: Doesn't come with cable.
I bought this device as I needed a scanner, and thought that maybe it would be better to buy something that contained everything in one unit, rather than trying to find the space for different machines.
So, anyway, after I unpacked it from its box, I noticed that the instructions where none existent, as all that was provided was a large sheet of paper, with pictures on how to install, and nothing about how to operate the machine. Inside the box, ... ...one for colour and the other black. Unfortunately, there was no connecting cables, and if it wasn't because I already had this, it would have meant spending more money. Which would have been around £8.99 for the USB. Still, I shouldn't grumble really, as I only paid £24.99, compared to the usual £49.99.
It took me a few seconds to plug in the machine to the mains and the back of my hard drive. This was followed by putting in the cartridges, although ...

As well as being a printer, this machine allows you to scan and copy documents. It can be used as a fax, although it doesn't have a built in fax modem. If you have the right software and your pc has a fax modem then you can use it to send faxes. Set-up

Advantages: Cheap, contains ink cartriges. Disadvantages: No instructions, Unhelpful "help". never got it to work.
...tried to print from the Lexmark program directly " cannot start print job" ( no explanation of why ) The scanner worked absolutely fine in fact and it did come with a free photo editor.
I contact the customer services they tell me to click the button at the end of the start menu tool bar and it will tell me where the problem is and how to fix it. Feeling very stupid for not knowing that, I did that and it said " unspecified error" Well that was ... ...must me me connecting it wrong.
How hard is it to put a plug in the mains and connect USB cable from pc to printer? Then feeling even more stupid again followed all the trouble shooting guides( which took hours as the pc had to restart after most of them and had to start from the first one again each time to find where I got to last time)
Cut a long long story short still didn't print took it back and the man in Currys took one look at it and said ...

Quick review of Lexmark X1270
I bought this about 9 months ago,and for the next 6 months it was OK but not brilliant, recently it would only print in yellow I checked my cartridges and they came up as 75% full, so then I took them out to see if I could find out what the problem was, when I put them back in I got an on screen message 'cartridge missing', with so many niggling problems I decided to give it to a charity shop, maybe someone else will have better luck than me , I have had Lexmark printers in the past and I swore I would never buy one again, but when I saw the price of this one I thought that maybe I was just unlucky . ...
