I have had this printer for nearly 1 year now. Be aware that it has been updated by Lexmark and a newer version is available (the X3580). I've done some compairing and will mention any differences I know of below.
What it is: Its a 3 in 1 Multifunction unit. It prints, has a scanner and has a copier. Will connect to your computer via a USB port.
Shops: This is available on E.Bay (various sellers) and PC World have it listed. Its NO longer on Currys or comet (who used to sell it). It'll cost under £40 from the shops and less from auction.
Size: On line you'll get info on it in various sizes. I'll show it in 'old money': Its 15" wide, 11" long and 6" tall, so a fair size. Just look at a piece of A4 on the floor and imagine a few extra inches all round! Once its loaded with paper, the paper shoot sticks out at the back by a few inches.
Spec: Its print size is 4800 x 1200 dpi, so what you print comes out quite reasonable. They claim a printing page rate of 17 pages per minute! (Yea, right. Only on a good day, downhill and thats with the wind behind). Try 1 page roughly every 10 seconds (so 6 a minute) if full of words. The paper shoot holds 100 sheets they say! Put 50 in and its fine. It does borderless photo-printing up to A4. It can take digital camera memory card readers. Scanning is at 600 x 1200 dpi. This is a windows compatable printer (and works on Vista, unlike my last printer!!). This is also PictBridge Compatible.
Use: Has JUST 7 buttons on the front (and one of them is the on/off). Its easy to operate and doing copies is easy. The paper loads fairly easily at the rear though the paper guide slider has a very flimsy feel.
Does it work?: Yes. Generally it works quite well. You do get the occasional chewed up bit of paper, but then what printer doesn't. Letters and printed items come out quite well. Photographs are not the top end of the scale but are quite acceptable. Any copies of things are of a quite acceptable standard, clear and non-blurred edges.
Good Points: This has only 1 cartridge and has been lasting me a good +250 pages fairly full of words. Changeing the ONLY ink cartridge is easy and not messy.
Bad Points: Sometimes you have to press a button on it and its so EASY to just turn it off (DOH). It warns you the printer ink is low yet it carries on for a good 100 pages after (Dont believe it when it says change the cartridge, keep going).
Updated Model: As I said above, this printer has been replaced by the X3580. This newer model costs £10 more and uses 2 ink cartridges. That seems to be the only real difference.
Advantages: quality, easy to use, exceeds suggested amout to print Disadvantages: none
I use lexmark cartridge No 2 for my printer, they are readily available in PC World £14.99 and other shops stock them too Such as Tesco, Argos, etc.
They come in a vibrant red box and has a large No 2 inside a rainbow ringed circle, with the Models it is suitable fo ( X2480 & X3480) clearly marked on the front of the box.
Lexmark states on the box that they are the Original replacement cartridge with a new intergrated Print head to give you sharp Crystal clear results over time.
They are very simple to fit into the printer just lift up the fixing cover and slot in to place and snap shut the holding lid, slide back in place in the printer. (dont forget to remove the sticky seal 1st).
The ink lasts for approx 120 print outs, you get more than this if printing mainly black and white, or slightly less if printing a lot ...
The Lexmark X3480 is an affordable Photo All-in-one that offers useful photo-printing features such as memory cardreaders and Pictbridge port and the ability to produce stunning quality borderless prints up to A4 size.
