Whilst purchasing a computer in the summer of 2004 I was given this printer as part of the companies package. I remember thinking at the time that there must be a catch, but I wasn't really ready for the experience. The printer came boxed up with the rest of the PC and from memory it was easy to set up. The CD that came with it for installing it's drivers was easy to use and I had no hassle in getting everything to work. The only thing that concerned me before I started to use it was its size and weight. It looked a good size, but when you held it the printer felt cheap and very light. The plastic flip up paper holder felt incredibly light and flimsy. It never broke, but then I was very careful in treating it gently and I never really used the printer for long periods.

The cartridges supplied with the printer were Lexmark cartridges numbers 16 & 26, with one black cartridge and the other one for colour. It was here that I discovered my first gripe with the printer. The cartridges themselves were easy to install, as you could lift the front cover and the cartridge holders would come to the middle. Lifting the plastic covers allow for the change over of cartridges as and when required. The only thing with these supplied cartridges was they were 'half' sized cartridges and ran out after a very short time. I cannot remember exactly how many pages, but it was within the second month of using the new printer.

A trip to the local computer vendor revealed the true cost of running this printer with prices for the 'half' cartridges of around £17 each. The full cartridges (Lexmark no.s 17 and 27) were no better with a price tag of £37 to £39 on the high street. The half cartridges were rare, so I had to shell out around £75 pounds for two cartridges for my free printer. Needless to say I was not a happy bunny, but for some bizarre reason I kept the printer and carried on using it. I think this was due to it ease of use and lack of paper jams.

The full cartridges were not much better and many times I had to change them when half used as they had ran out or dried out in when in use. Online computer stockists helped with prices for the full cartridges tumbling to around the £20 mark, however these were worse for drying out and as they were reconditioned cartridges the dud ones kept appearing with more regularity.

Casting the cartridge gripe to one side then next problem was the issue of slow printing or lack of printing. I normally printed a few page here or a few there, but when I did try and print a large document the damn thing nearly fell on its backside. I lost count of the times it would get halfway through a large document and then hang itself whilst it attempted to clean it's heads and carry on printing. On others occasions it would take the first page and then spend an age flinging the cartridge heads left and right whilst it tried to make up its mind whether to print the first page or not.

When the printer did print a page they came out slowly and on the good side I never had any paper jams. Text and magazine type pages were okay in quality, however photo prints even with the right paper and after using the preferences to set everything up were streaky and not very good to look at. Also the black could come on very heavy in dark areas of a picture and then would take forever to dry out. If I picked up any pictures too soon say around about two minutes after printing I would smudge then with my fingers which would upset me all the more.

Finally back on warm autumnal afternoon one weekend I tried to print out a large document for a report I was doing for work. I could have waited, but I wanted to move the report along a bit and I knew Monday's were a bad day for the company server which was probably down again after a Spam filled weekend. First the black had dried out again around halfway and for some reason the colour was not working right. I tried cleaning the heads and checking that everything was working right, then I went out and bought new Lexmark branded cartridges from my local retailer. Still nothing seemed to produce a decent page and I was thinking that I might have blocked the printing heads themselves. I even took the drastic step of checking for any updated printer files on Lexmark's website, but found nothing of any use. Eventually the printer chugged, whirred and stopped printing a page. I walked away to get a beverage and was horrified to find it leaking ink on my return. It was over my desk and running onto the floor. I took the only option available and launched it out of an upstairs window in the direct of the dustbin. Of all its talents flying wasn't one of them and I watched with satisfaction as it shattered into little plastic bits.

So overall my time with this printer was not a happy one. I had an older Canon printer which I would use more regularly than this one and was indeed slightly better. I later used a spare Canon i80 from my work, which so far has been trouble free. The only good things to note for this printer was its ease of use and the stunningly quick time that it took me to set it up on the PC. Other that I cannot really recommend this product at all as it only really lasted me just over two years until it's failure and I never really used it on a regular basis so its reliability was poor to say the least. It was able to print text adequately, but nothing more and as a printer was not really much fun to use. The slow printing times and mini hiatuses that the printer had during operations were an annoyance. So in light of this experience I would not buy this printer nor any Lexmark again, but this would be mainly based on the expense and poor performance of the manufacturers cartridges.

Lexmark Z605-How disappointing
Review of Lexmark Z 605 Color Jetprinter by MatthewPickard

Advantages: Cheap Printer
Disadvantages: It's cheap for a reason

When i bought my computer I got this printer free with it, 'great news' i thought. I have since found out how cheap they are in stores but at the time i was delighted to get a printer from such a well known brand for free. Once home I started to install the printer and it's software and was impressed with the speed this was possible and how easy and clear the instructions, i would have thought everyone would have no problem with this simple installation. ...
...small little printer, it did exactly the job i needed it to do, printing out my schoolwork and pictures in black and white or colour, both at a decent quality. The noise was no more an issue than it was with any other printer I have had. The speed of printing was quite laboured but i expected no more. A quirky little feature is the voice informing you 'print started' and 'print finished', all was going well with the printer. Then the problems started ... Read review

Panic - my printer broke down!!!!
Review of Lexmark Z 605 Color Jetprinter by deebeebee

Advantages: Cheaper than buying replacement cartridges
Disadvantages: Not exactly an environmentally friendly attitude!

I had a Lexmark Z35 on free loan in connection with my Open University Course. Unfortunately it broke down (one of my children knocked it to the floor, accidentally, and it suffered major damage). I was unable to get an immediate loan replacement, and I needed to submit a hard copy of my coursework within a matter of days. I was devastated! In complete panic, and expecting major expenditure, I took a Sunday afternoon trip to the local Tesco superstore ...
...learn. Full marks to Lexmark for consistency there. The printer does everything that the Z35 did, and as efficiently, and to the same quality. Black and colour printing are of perfectly acceptable quality; print cartridges are easy to load, just like the Z35. Power and connecting cables are interchangeable with those of the Z35 (so I now have spares). OK, like any inkjet printer is does not operate silently. I can live with that. And, sometimes, ... Print it up!
Review of Lexmark Z 605 Color Jetprinter by cncmoney

Advantages: Ease of use. Good Quality!
Disadvantages: Loud clanky noise. Jams up every now ans then.

I have owned and Epson and a HP Copier/Scanner/Printer all in one. This printer is much easier and made for my budget. I am not even going to tell you what I spent on the HP! I brought it home and hooked it up. Very easy to do. Just plug in electricity and plug in USB Cable and Presto I was ready to install the Software. The Software took a few minutes to install, But would take me hours to go through all that it offer. Here is just a few: 1. ...

Lexmark Color JetPrinter Z605 - My Experiences
Review of Lexmark Z 605 Color Jetprinter by chikachi

Advantages: Very Cheap and Easy to Use
Disadvantages: Expensive Ink - Can be slow

I bought this printer in a high street computer retailer for the bargain price of £9.99! The price was so impressive that it was an absolute must have - no more running to the university libary to print my coursework ..... Or so I thought. This printer is incredibly easy to set up and use - just plug it in, install the software and your away! It prints perfectly good text - not so great for photos though. It has none of the banding or lines that ...
...main downside to this printer is the cost of the replacement ink. I found out that the black ink cartridge doesnt last as long as other makes. Believe it or not the price of one replacement cartridge is more than the cost of a whole new printer! When shopping around the cheapest black ink that I found was £17.99 the cheapest colour was £22.99. It works out cheaper to go and buy another 9.99 printer and just take the ink that is included in the packaging! ... Read review
