I don't tend to do a lot of printing at home (I always tend to print things at work), but thought it would be a good idea to have a printer at home if ever there was an emergency.
All I knew was that I wanted a basic colour printer, and for it to not cost too much. After a lot of searching I found the LEXMARK Z640 which was selling for £25.99 at Comet.
I've been using this printer at home for about a year now and decided it was about time that I wrote a review about it.
**What is it**
The Z640 is a colour thermal inkjet designed for everyday printing needs.
**Appearance**
The printer is quite small in size measuring 404 x 216 x 135 mm and weighing just 4.5kg. The printer is a very light grey colour, with a dark grey paper inlet at the back, and an adjustable paper outlet at the front. There is one large round shaped button on the top which lights up when the printer is switched on.
**Specifications**
Print Speed: Up to 14 ppm - black draft Up to 8 ppm - colour draft Up to 10 ppm - black normal Up to 3 ppm - colour normal Max Resolution ( B&W ): 2400 dpi x 1200 dpi Max Resolution ( Colour ): 4800 dpi x 1200 dpi Total Media Capacity: 100 sheets Media Feeder(s): 1 x auto load - 100 sheets Output Trays Capacity: 25 sheets Connections: 1 x USB
**Set up**
This was incredibly easy and straightforward to follow. The printer box includes nearly everything you need: a colour cartridge (but no black), a power cable, a printed setup guide and installation CD. The USB cable is not included but can be picked up fairly cheaply. The software was installed on to the computer and there is an on screen wizard with full instructions to follow to install the driver.
** Toner**
Two cartridges are needed for this printer - colour and black. The cartridges are quite expensive to replace, costing around £15 per cartridge from most outlets. They are very easy to replace, lift the lid on the printer and the cartridges move to the middle of the printer for easy access. Each cartridge has its only separate holder which is easy to open allowing easy and non messy changing of the ink.
**Use**
Unfortunately this printer is quite slow and I wouldn't recommend that you use it if you print a lot. The quality, however, of the print in both black and white and colour, are of quite good quality considering the cost of the printer. It is quite noisy, but this doesn't really affect me at home, although this could be a problem if used in an already noisy environment. This printer can be used to print on banners Cards Coated Paper Envelopes Glossy Paper Index Cards Iron-On Transfers Labels Photo Paper Plain Paper Transparencies, although I have only ever printed on plain paper.
**Overall**
I would only recommend this printer if you are only planning on printing minimal amounts. Although the printer is quite cheap, the price of the ink cartridges significantly increases the cost of using this printer. A £15 cartridge will only print around 275 pages.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Printer cartridges / inks are serious problem for most printers. I prefer using HP printers because it's easy for refilling inks.

Good review - don't bother with the official Lexmark cartridges, it's a con. The copies from Cartridge World do the same job for a FRACTION of the price and don't damage your printer!
