"LEX do some printing...."

We've had our Z65 for approximately six months now and so far, so good. No problems except for a paper jam caused by me trying to use paper which had been creased and near heart failure when one of the ink cartridges ran out and I was told the cost of replacing them - but more on that later....

We chose the printer for two reasons - cost and previous experience. The printer set us back less than £45 from Staples and was installed within minutes of getting it home thanks to USB and Windows XP (Les calls it Plug n Play which basically means when you plug a new bit of kit into a Windows XP PC, it recognises it without you needing to do anything !). Les had experience of Lexmark printers which he had owned previously (and only parted with it reluctantly when he split with a former girlfriend).

Available from a variety of PC type outlets, PC World are the only company I am aware of that don't stock Lexmark models.

The Z65 came with both Black & White and colour cartridges but these ran out quite quickly considering we only really used the printer for some holidays snaps and a couple of road maps... To my horror this was when I discovered that replacements are approx £28 each which means two cartridges cost more than the printer ! Also, the colour cartridge isn't separated so if we used all the cyan but no magenta, we'd still have to replace the whole lot - something to bear in mind if you're considring buying one of these. I must point out at this point that we overcame this slight hitch by investing just £15.00 plus VAT in an IMS ink refill kit (more on that in a forthcoming review) and re-filling the cartridges ourselves saving valuable pennies.

The Z65 is approximately 40cm wide and 25 cm high and is grey and cream in colour. There are two separate paper feeds so you can keep normal and photo quality paper in at the same time - buttons on the front allow you to swap between as you print (I will add though that the paper feed trays which stand almost upright feel a bit flimsy and I reckon they'd break with only the slightest knock). There is also a power button (simple on / off) and a button to change between each of the two paper feeds depending on what you are printing at the time.

I was surprised at how heavy the printer was considering it does look quite 'plasticky' although most people wouldn't have any problems carrying this a distance such as from the shop to the car. When in use, the paper feed trays fold out and there is also a pull out tray for receiving paper once printing completes. These can both be folded away for storage purposes.

Loading paper is childs play as you simply place the paper into the trays which grab the pages automaticslly - you then you just print as you would normally - nothing complicated, no fuss. The printer is quite noisy in a 'grinding' sort of way - the only way to give you an indication of how noisy is to compare it to my hairdryer - although different sounds, the volume is comparable.

Quality is good - 4800 x 1200 dpi which will easily fool people into thinking the print outs are actual photos. Being a inkjet printer, it is quite noisy while in operation but reasonably fast - 21ppm mono and 15ppm colour.

The Lexmark Z65 has just a single interface as standard - USB. This allows it to be used with a variety of computers and Apple Macs. I have also been told that the Z65 can't be upgraded to the Z65n, so if you require a network option, you'll have to buy the 'n' model.

Overall, for a cheap and cheerful printer suitable for the odd holiday snaps and a couple of A-Z's, it has more than met our needs. However, it's probably best to look elsewhere if you require anything more. Definitely bear in mind the cost of printer versus cost of replacement cartridges dilemma as this isn't something we considered before making this purchase and now realise two cartridges will cost us more than the printer itself (unless you plan to refill yourself as we do) !
