I love my libraries!

Advantages: Free books, try new authors
Disadvantages: You can't keep the stock, funding cuts, library fines

I base the observations below on my experiences as a holder of 4 library cards for the last few years – London is divided for local government purposes into 32 boroughs which each have their own system – I have cards for the ...
...London borough. Mike has 3 library cards and yes, I do use his too. I am a compulsive borrower of more books than I can possibly read.

Public libraries now commonly offer

• free books - the opportunity to read a range of fiction and non-fiction for free, including many of the latest bestsellers and some other less well-known books. Currently councils have to provide a library service which lends out books for free, ... more

We've got a Ticket to Read....

Advantages: Lots on offer....much more than you think!
Disadvantages: People still have a view of libraries as quiet and boring.

...claim to know everything about Library Services but I think, after over ten years in the business, I have some knowledge to impart about this very important public service. From being a little girl I apparently always wanted to work in a library. My mum likes to tell people (don't they just LOVE to tell others such things) how I had a little ink pad, stamps and library cards. I played libraries and all my books were in alphabetical order ~ sad but ...
...asked to work in the Library Service rather than in a bank or a shop. I went off to University and then I started applying for jobs. I got one in my town's main library and the rest is history (I even met my husband there). So, for the uninitiated, what does a library have to offer? Well, each authority is different so I can only tell you about MY library. I am not going to reel off any facts, figures and prices about libraries. Aside from being ...

Oh no, the big four oh

Advantages: Accessible to all
Disadvantages: none

...his prone state, unlike the library staff who seemed content to walk round/step over him. They are probably more used to seeing this sort of thing than I but I took it upon myself to call for an ambulance and have him hospitalised. Probably wouldn't thank me for it when he came to, but at least it cleared the entrance for all us book devotees. If you are a council tax (rates, or whatever it calls itself these days)payer and have a permanent address, ...
...is standard or varies from library to library. You can borrow a combination of books, videos, dvds, cds and my very favourite, talking books. Books are loaned free of charge and you get them for three weeks. If you fail to return them on the due date you have to pay a fine unless you are an OAP. Suppose they make allowances for older people being more forgetful but unfortunately haven't reached my golden years yet, so still have to pay if I'm late ...

Free Books For All

...~~~ My Mum & The Library ~~~ I think that dear old Mum would be lost without the library, it would cost her a fortune to buy all the books she reads. During the week she regularly visits two or three libraries, which although all in the same borough offer a different selection of books and differing levels of quality (that’s her excuse for visiting so many). She holds three library tickets, hers, my fathers and mine although I no longer live ...
...takes it in to the library on her next visit. One complaint she does have though is that one library in her area charges 5p more than all the others for reservations. They are always phoning her up to say they have a book in for her and she dashes down there to pick up her books before they closed. Funny how they always phone the day before they are closed for the day. When I was a kid my Mum also used to borrow paintings from the library but they ...

A Favourite Thing. Where My Passion Began

Advantages: Unlimited resources, All books are free so long as you return them on time.
Disadvantages: None

...what a wonderful place the library was... Over the years as I grew up I returned to the library on a regular basis, although I have two older sisters more often then not it would just be myself and my father who would walk hand in hand to that wonderful building. For many years I was only allowed into the small children's corner and I longed for the day when I was old enough to explore the rest of the building. There were no doors or barriers to ...
...my daughter to the local library and how times have changed. Our local library is bright and airy. The children's section has bean bags and activity mats scattered around the floor and rather then silence it is filled with chatter and laughter as the children play. This is actively encouraged by the staff and several times a week they arrange activities for children of all ages. Funnily enough though even though no-one else bothers I still find myself ...

Revenge of the bookworm from Hell

Advantages: Free, great service
Disadvantages: None

...some time in a local library to help with this project. I currently live in Kirkham in Lancashire and work in nearby Preston, and moved here four years ago from the Midlands so I asked around at work to see where the best local library was, and got told to try the Harris Library in the middle of Preston. It's based in the Harris Museum and I didn't have any money for parking on the day I went to join, so I parked about five minutes away on a side ...
...day. The Harris Library is part of the Lancashire County Library Network and membership entitles you to get books out from any library in Lancashire, which is good, because I can also get books from my local library, round the corner from home in Kirkham. It's a much smaller library, with less stock, but it's a lot more convenient. The Harris Library itself is quite a large service in a large museum. It opens every day during the week, although ...

Your career as a writer starts here.

Advantages: Very informative. A detailed account of everything needed to write.
Disadvantages: A couple of specialist articles that readers may find irrelevant.

So who wants to be a writer? Come on hands up! Are you confident that you are the next Stephen King, Tom Clancy, Jane Austen, (insert favourite author here)? Do you have ideas of locking yourself in a remotely located wood cabin, emerging only to attend glitzy award ceremonies and to collect handsome royalties for your latest blockbuster? Well I do too. This is why I thoroughly recommend The Writers Handbook. There are so many publications on how to be published and so many writings on how to write that the field is swamped with conflicting advice. Well not here. It is just simply a full directory of every talent agency, publishing company, useful website, course, officiating body, library service and prize offerings within, what seems to be the world. The book is published and slightly updated every year, with a few new ...

Disadvantages: NOTHING

will usually feature a specific subject (sexual abuse, date rape, sibling donation or int his case high school shooting) but her novels don't really focus in the event but the cause and effect on the characters and there s usually a court case and an interesting twist to the tale. I have read quite a few of her novels now and she's one of my favorite authors, she rarely put a foot wrong. In 2003 she was awarded the New England Bookseller Award for Fiction. She has also been the recipient an Alex Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association, sponsored by the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust and Booklist, one of ten books written for adults that have special appeal for young adults; the Book Browse Diamond Award for novel of the year; a lifetime achievement award for mainstream fiction from the Romance Writers of America ...
