This machine pops the corn by means of hot air rather than oil, so it is very low in fat and also very easy to clean. In use, it is very noisy, rather like a hairdryer. A night in with a video has turned into one of my favourite treats, since I discovered the fastest, cheapest way to make a massive bowl of popcorn to accompany me! The popcorn is every bit as good as that expensive microwave stuff with only a fraction of the calories.
I've always loved popcorn, but I hate the hassle of heating up oil in a saucepan, and I find that microwave popcorn can be very greasy as well as very expensive. So, I took the plunge and spent £15 on a Prima popcorn maker. I got this one in Argos, but I think the basic machine is also sold under a couple of different names such as Lidl and Hinari.
This machine pops the corn by means of hot air rather than oil, so it is very low in fat and also very easy to clean. In use, it is very noisy, rather like a hairdryer. The popcorn kernels are poured in the top, switch it on, and after a couple of minutes the popped kernels come out the chute at the top and into your waiting bowl.
It's also great fun to use, as the popcorn really comes flying out of the chute at the top! In practice, this means that you get popcorn everywhere, so what I normally do is wrap a piece of card or a flexible chopping board around the bowl so that the kernels don't go everywhere. For anyone with kids, this would be bound to be a big hit, but big kids such as myself find it highly entertaining too :-) Take care of little fingers, though, as any unpopped kernels which end up in the bottom of the bowl will be VERY hot. The machine itself gets quite warm too as it is not very well insulated.
If you are not quite so concerned about the low-fat side of this product, there is also the option of melting butter in the popcorn measuring tray which sits in the top of the chute. The butter-melting tray also makes a useful measure for the popcorn kernels themselves. I have found however that the butter does not usually melt properly and I have to give it a few seconds in the microwave. Luckily the tray is plastic and safe to microwave.
Cleaning the machine is fairly simple. Because no oil is used, the machine itself does not need washing - just shake out any stray popcorn bits. The only part that will need washing is the chute and holder if you melt butter in it. The worktop usually needs a good clean too, as I always lose a few of the more explosive kernels, and usually get butter from the melting tray all over the place as I try to get it evenly dispersed throughout the bowl.

Advantages: Does What It Says Disadvantages: Not 'Naughty' Enough
As an experienced gadgeteer, I thought I had found the ideal gadget to complement my video machine. After all, the financial benefits of renting a video, as opposed to watching a film in the cinema, were being outweighed by the disadvantage of not being able to scoff vast quantities of fresh popcorn whilst viewing.
You may argue that popcorn can easily be 'popped' at home in a pan on the cooker, but then you haven't had the privilege of watching ... ...smoke alarm from screeching after yet another disasterous effort to do so.
I am not a bad cook, you understand, there are just some foods that I can't quite get the hang of cooking. Popcorn is one of these rare beasts. Totally untameable, it has the habit of taking too much time to pop if the temperature is too low, and suddenly bursting forth when I lift the lid to see what isn't happening! The alternative is the 'oil too hot' scenario which results ...

Advantages: Cheap Hot Popcorn at Home Disadvantages: None
We have just bought a Popcorn Maker and it is very good. It cost £9.99 from Lidl, its not a known brand name but is made by Belmonte in Portugal, the Argos catalogue have the Hinari one for £14.50 and it looks identical to the one we have bought except that the Hinari one has a logo on it.
Using the machine you can make hot popcorn in seconds without making a mess of a pan and you don’t need oil or butter. If you want butter there is a little dish ... ...popcorn is cooking and then you pour it over the cooked popcorn. The machine is quite small and the popcorn is popped straight into your eating bowl so there is only one bowl to wash.
Popcorn makes a quick healthy snack for all ages, my 19 month old daughter loves it too.
This is a good machine and very cheap ...

Advantages: great for children Disadvantages: none
Whenever my grand children come to visit me the first thing they want is popcorn. I have got a Hinari Movie Time popcorn maker, it is so easy to use even my grand children can use it themselves, but only if somebody is there to watch over them.
Whenever I know they are going to visit, I always have a serving dish ready and waiting for them. When they arrive they always check to see if I have got everything ready, which I have, so all we do is just ...
