I discovered Lidl a few years ago when they built a new store close by. I don't use it all the time but quite often.
Location: There are 2 stores within 10 minutes drive from my home. One I can reach by a non congested back street route and the other is in close proximity on a retail park. Both are on direct bus routes from the town Centre.
Parking: I've never had a problem. There is ample parking at the retail park including disabled spaces close to the store entrance. At the more local store the car park is smallish but there are always spaces. It is usually easy to get off both carparks when shopping is completed,no long queues of traffic. Trollies: You need a pound coin for these and there is only one type. There are no handbaskets. Trollies don't seem to have a mind of their own and are big enough for a large shop.
Prices: Everything is really cheap here. Their fruit and vegetables are especially cheap, often a quarter of the price of the major supermarkets. Their alcoholic drinks, although not brands that I recognised are also very cheap.
Quality: I have never had to complain about anything that I have bought here. Although the brands are often unfamiliar their quality is as good as more widely known brands.
Range: This is fairly limited, but there is usually one type of most things so you can get what you need, but don't get confused over which variety/brand is best. In addition to the usual range of foods there are also so items that are usually not widely available. Lots of German and continental style food. The only section where fresh produce is available is on the fruit and vegetable section, again here the choice is limited, but the quality and prices are excellent. There is also a section that sells the most amazing range of goods from boy's socks, wheelbarrows ,tablecloths, underpants, jigsawpuzzles,lightfittings.....you get the picture. These delights change regularly and there is always something interesting here. There is a limited range of chilled and frozen meat although there are occasional special offers on unexpected things like venison. Some named brands are available here including Hovis loaves.
Store layout: The store is based on the philosophy, pile it high and sell it cheap. so goods are often still in boxes and not arranged neatly on shelves. The aisles are wide and allow for easy movement around the store. There are occasional move arounds and things aren't always where you would logically expect them to be,
Checkouts; Because the store is not as busy as the major supermarkets the checkouts are fewer, often there is only one in operation. Most of the time this is not a problem, but sometimes the queue stretches almost half way to the back of the shop. Carrier bags are available but they have to be paid for with your shopping. 3p for small, less durable ones and 10 for a larger more robust bag that can be used over and over again. There is no help with packing and you are expected to put your goods back into your trolley and pack your bag away from the checkout area. CAUTION - YOU CANNOT USE YOUR CREDIT CARDS HERE. but your debit card, switch, maestro are OK.They like cash too! Opening Times. Our local stores seem to be open fom about 9 until 8 Also both are open 10 - 4 on Sunday, but Sunday visits are not recommended as ofen there is limited stock as there are no deliveries of fresh goods.

I only really go to Lidl Christmas and Easter time, when they stock German sweets and goodies. Otherwise the treck is just not worth it. Desiree x
