In this current climate of feeling the pinch we are told that people are abandoning their preferences for brands and going for cheaper options. No retailer embodies this trend more than Lidl.

If you have time, and we seldom do, as we all work 60+ hours a week and tend to try to get the shopping done in a single visit once a month, it is nice to cherry pick the best deals from a variety of shops.

We have recently returned from a fortnight's break in Cornwall, spent in a delightful holiday cottage near Penzance and whilst there we tried some of the alternatives offered by the Lidl store in Newlyn.

They are a good for the basics and the prices are low enough to be worth a punt on things that you would normally pay that bit extra for.

An example of this was the Corn Flakes. At less than 75p for a 500 gram box branded as 'Crownfield' I was impressed, both by the taste and the crunchy texture, in fact I think I prefer them to Kelloggs.

Their washing liquid was less than a pound for a bottle and does a perfectly satisfactory job of removing salt water and pasty stains from my wide range of T shirts.

There was also a very good Aloe Vera toilet roll for about £1.25 for 4 rolls.

Bargain of the week was the pack of cheese spread slices in the style of Laughing Cow, 24 portions for about £1.40.

Lidls are the epitome of no frills retailing, there are few staff in store and they do work very hard, their pay is substantially better than most supermarkets but they earn it.
I particularly like their Dentalux toothpaste, at a mere 59p a tube (used to be 47p) it does a great job on the venerable gnashers, with a mild herby taste.

All in all, with the tightening of the JFP family budget, it is well worth investigating what parts of the household shop can be completed satisfactorily at Lidl.

No frills is what they do, and they mean it. There are no free bags, very small packing areas so that you are encouraged to take your goods away from the till and pack them in a separate area, which speeds up the check out process.
We get through gallons of their very affordable fruit juices and I usually have a pack of 12 500ml spring water bottles in the car, as working from the car it can be hard to get a drink when I need one.
Parking is usually very good at all of the stores I have visited.

On one occasion I needed to return a faulty item, the staff dealt with it very efficiently with a minimum of fuss, just how it should be.

Yes, LIDL's full of surprises. In a tasting test of German Xmas cake (Stollen) they beat M&S and the rest. Well worth a look. Trouble is, and this goes for ALDI too, I keep coming out with some handy gadget I didn't intend to buy!
