Writing about religion can be a tricky business. If you're too controversial, you're pretty much guaranteed to upset an awful lot of people (although it never did Dan Brown any harm). Go too far the other way, and it can all seem a bit dogmatic, alienating a large proportion of your potential readership. However, strike the right balance, and you could just end up with a story that challenges and provokes its readers as much as it entertains them - this is almost certainly what Yann Martel has achieved here.

Of course, Life of Pi isn't necessarily a religious story at all; the subject is approached within the text, but if you choose not to find such meaning in the subtext, the only reference to the topic exists as a side-point in the character development, and need not impinge on your reading at all. Approach from the opposite direction, however, and there's an immense array of themes and concepts to be read into the novel.

We spend the first third or so of this book becoming familiar with the central character, Pi Patel - Pi as in 3.14..., adopted to avoid the mocking of his early years at school, in which his full name, Piscine, was unfortunately mis-pronounced.

"You're facing the wall. Are you Pi55ing?"

We learn slowly about the world Pi inhabits, and through the family's Zoo in Pondicherry, India, about the ways of animals, and their relationship with humans. Martel writes with a patient, unpretentious style, steadily strolling along, turning over new ideas like stones on a beach, playing with concepts in Pi's world and ours.

As we are given the abridged version of Pi's growth, so we see his spiritual expansion, and are introduced to some of the ideas I believe this work is a allegory for. Through his teenage years, Pi discovers religion, or rather religions, enthralled by the power and insight to be found in Christianity, Islam and Hindu, and the sense of peace and fulfillment to be found in their practice. Few people - his family, the religious representatives - seem to understand or agree with Pi's stance; for them it is only possible to have one set of beliefs, but Pi apparently is of the mindset: if one religion is good, surely three is thrice so good?. This concept, that it is religion intrinsically, rather than any specific religion, that is good, is fascinating, and is one amongst the many thought-provokers in this novel.

From here, we are taken to the day when Pi's family decided to leave India; to sell the Zoo and its animals, and move to Canada. Joining them on the boat were a number of creatures, they too heading for their new lives on the American continent.

However, a storm strikes the boat, and Pi is thrown into a lifeboat, separated from his family. Worse still, there appears to be a particularly large Bengal Tiger sitting at the other end of the boat, hiding beneath the tarpaulin. As the ship disappears, and Pi is cast out into the vastness of the ocean, the craft picks up extra passengers; a Zebra, a Hyena and an Orangutan. The book now takes the shape of a survival story - will all of them, indeed will any of them, get off the boat alive?

Here Pi's experiences in the Zoo come to the fore - it is his relationship with the animals, and the animals' with each other, that makes this something more than a regular "cast-away" story - there is food and water onboard, enough to last a reasonable amount of time, so it's not likely to be hunger or thirst that gets to Pi. Rather, the operation of this bizarre and extraordinarilly mixed-up animal cage is going to be the factor that dominates proceedings.

Once again, Martel's narrative is exceptional. Reaching inside Pi's head, he creates a world aboard this book that seems so real and dangerous, and builds an empathetic relationship between reader and protaganist. His creation of the tiger/boy dynamic between Richard Parker (the tiger) and Pi is intriguing, and his personification of the creature raises it above the level of the other, more simple, animals on board.

Of course, there may be significance to the personification. I guess this should be a spoiler-alert, but I'm not able to impart a definite reading, even my reading - it is merely one version of events, implied by the characters at the end called upon to investigate the incident, that there never were any animals onboard - it was simply Pi's way of coping with the primitive, inhuman conditions of the boat to rationalise that the people were actually animals, and as such their actions were understandable. Other interpretations can easily be drawn - maybe things really were as Pi described, despite their apparent implausibility.

For me, the essential message is it doesn't really matter which version of events you believe - they all started on the boat and ended on the coast of Mexico, and there's nothing you can do to change the things that have happened. An analogy can easily be drawn with the multitude-of-religions concept addressed earlier. That's not meant to be an apathetic reaction, as I see it - rather one that figures: it doesn't matter what you believe in, as long as you believe in something.

A short chapter from the book seems to bear this out:

"I can well imagine an aetheist's last words: 'White, white! L-L-Love! My God!' - and the deathbed leap of faith. Whereas the agonostic, if he stays true to his reasonable self, if he stays true to dry, yeastless factuality, might try to explain the warm light bathing him by saying, 'Possibly a f-f-failing oxygenation of the b-b-brain,' and, to the very end, lack imagination and miss the better story."

Of course, with all such books of apparent subtextual depth, it is easy to go way beyond the author's original intentions, and place too much emphasis on things of little true significance. But this is the beauty of this book - as a story of one boy and his incredible adventures, it holds up as a superbly-told, well plotted, entertaining and innovative novel (albeit one that takes a little while to become really interesting, and requires some patience). If you want to read something more into it, there's plenty to go on - and for this duality, as well as the essential quality of the tale, this has to be one of the best books I've read in an awful long time.

Yes, good review. I have to say that I chose not to read anything too complicated into the book, and therefore thought it consisted of 100 pages of precise, electrifying narration (roughly, from when he's first adrift in the lifeboat to the arrival at the "island") sandwiched between two slices of slow, self-indulgent tosh. But religion never meant anything to me, so maybe that's just me. Cheers, Duncan
