Delia Smith - The First Cookbook You Should Buy When You Set

Advantages: Good basic recipes which are easy to follow.
Disadvantages: Would like a few more photos - how do I know I got it right...

DELIA SMITH'S COMPLETE COOKERY COURSE The book that I am reviewing is more than 15 years old and is the illustrated complete hardback version. I have seen paperback versions in the shops and also ones that are a smaller size than my copy. However, I believe the content is mostly the same. ***What's it all about?*** This is a complete illustrated cookery course and my copy contains 576 pages. There is a conversion chart at the beginning and the book ...

The layout of the book is good, with recipes interspersed ...

Juices and smoothies for everyone

Advantages: Wide range of recipes to suit most tastes.
Disadvantages: None, really

...you're already a convert to the joys of juicing, this book will no doubt add some new ideas to your repertoire. If you don't own a juicer (or do own one but it's gathering dust at the back of the cupboard) you might be inspired to give it a try. I bought nutritionist Natalie Savona's book for £5 from Lakeland Ltd, which I thought was pretty good value. (The cover price is £12.99!) The gimmick of the book is 365 recipes - "one for every day of the ...
...in and out, trying out the recipes which appeal to you and glossing over the ones which don't. The vast bulk of the book is made up of the aforementioned 365 recipes for fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies and "quenchers" (mainly made from frozen fruit / ice). The book is usefully subdivided by types of fruit, meaning that it's easy to locate recipes with, for instance, an apple base. The excellent index makes this even easier, listing all the ...

Slimming World Curry Feast

Advantages: Easy to follow instructions
Disadvantages: Pictures look great - mine turn out looking different

...nerve racking...however being on the slimming world diet I thought it can't be any worse than the other concoctions I have taken to eating in a bid to lose weight. I have only made 2 things from the book so far,a chicken curry which was even nicer when it had been frozen and reheated and the onion bhaji's which were really, really good but for those in the know quite high in syn value. However, a lot of the curries can be made syn free comparred ...
...explains the basic's of the slimming world diet in case you have not read your food optimising book! The receipe's are one to a page, with every other one having a full page picture of the finished product. The different sections of the book are well defined: starters, salads, meat, poultry, fish, rice and lentils and pulses, vegetables and accompaniments. The book cost me (I think) £8 from my slimming world consultant which I think is great value ...

Excellent for beginners

Advantages: Easy to learn with
Disadvantages: Some people don't like the pictures on the deck

...favoured by many experienced readers. The pictures for the cards relate well to their meaning making it easier to read the cards. Also as it is so popular many other decks are based illustrated on the same symbolism making it quicker to adapt to new decks. Although I know some people don't like the images used on the Rider-Waite deck I personally find the images on the deck very beautiful. For some examples of the pictures on the deck: http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/original-rider-waite/index.shtml ...
...as it is one of the most popular decks so it makes fairly easy to learn with this deck compared to some others that don't follow the traditional structure. The deck is easy to shuffle and has a small white border round the images which isn't distracting but means the edges won't wear away after having them a long time. ...

Collins Gem Calorie Counter-fairly easy to use and a handy sized

Advantages: Lists a wide range of products, fairly easy to use, and does help you lose weight
Disadvantages: The number of calories listed is usually per 100g/ml, so can be hard to work out calories used

...well as stating what the calorie content of the food is, the book also tells you the levels of protein, carbohydrates, fat and fibre. I have found that the book is generally easy to use. Once you have found the right page for the food you are looking for, the calorie totals etc are listed across the page next to that food item. There is only one disadvantage to this book really in my opinion. Unless stated next to a particular food item, the calorific ...
...mililetres so, in a lot of cases, you will need to weigh or measure your food and then work out the number of calories from there. This can be time consuming if you are keeping a food diary. Other than the above, I have found this book to be useful and I have started losing weight because of using it, along with doing exercise a few times a week. I would defiantly recommend using it to help lose weight, but, as it can be time consuming, thennit as ...
