Advantages Strong and durable

Disadvantages Has an annoying catch.

I first used Lindam Stair Gates when I had my daughter three and a half years ago. I bought two gates in total and use one for the bottom of the stairs and one for the kitchen. I have since had another child who is 18 months, which is why I still use them. The gate is made of metal and is painted white, while the locking mechanism is made of plastic. The gate is held to the walls with four very large screw shaped pieces with a rubber end that is held by pressure against the walls or the staircase banisters. It is very easy to assemble. You just have the gate and four screw pieces which you just screw to the right size to fit it.

The gate is very strong and has not dented nor has any paint chipped since we have bought them, and they have been in constant use for three and a half years. The locking mechanism is very easy to use once you can see how, I usually have to show guests who come around, but they pick it up quickly. It is also easy to open with one hand. My oldest daughter was 6 when we first used them and found it easy to open after a short time. However my three and a half year old cannot do it, which is good as I don’t have to worry about her leaving it open for the baby.

There is no fixing to the wall. The four screw shaped pieces easily hold it to the wall securely, and you can easily loosen and tighten it with the plastic reels on it once it is up.

The gates have had many bashings and aggressive shaking by my children and they have never fallen. This excludes my 10 year old who has occasionally used it as a hurdle when coming off the stairs and it has fallen down, but I can safely say that is beyond the gate’s remit.

A little annoying thing about it, is that there is a little plastic catch at the bottom, which you can rotate with your foot to stop the gate opening easily, even when opened with the top catch. This catch sometimes rotates by itself and stops the gate opening and you have to undo it with your foot. Not an awful problem but annoying when you expect the gate to open and when it doesn’t you practically bump into it.

Overall I would highly recommend this gate and I think the price I paid, £25. Is very reasonable, especially considering it’s long life.
