Advantages: Easy to set up, configure and use Disadvantages: None
We currently run an 80 user network in our office. While the main traffic of our network is handled by 6, 24port rack mounted switches, my little IT office has 7 PCs in it with not enough ports on the wall to connect them up.
this poses a problem. To connect to our network, you need a network connection on the Wall. There are 4 connections in our office and 7 machines. Obviously 7 into 4 does not go so a solution was needed.
The answer?
A small desktop based switch that would allow us to connect up to 16 computers to one Network connection on the wall.
The Product?
Well we use Netgear equipment in our office because you know with Netgear, you are buying quality at an affordable price.
So we opted for the FS116 Desktop Switch.
The size of it?
Well its about an inch high and about a foot long. It is about 6 inches from ...
Advantages: Easy to use, easy to install Disadvantages: closeness of the ports.
of bolt it into the Rack!
The size of the switch is very small for its capacity. The 24ports are very compact and this is a bit of a double edged sword. True, you can get a lot of computers hooked up to it while using a very small item but it can also be too fiddly. When there are 24 network cables hanging around and clipped in, it is exremely hard to unclip one individual cable on a packed switch.
The indicator lights above each port tell you when the port is live and being used. This is handy for when you need to pull out "dead" cables. It siginifies if there is any network traffic coming out of the port.
The guide lights on the left hand side also make a great "quick glance" reference.
The autocinfigure button is available and used to allow a mixture of network speeds, cable types, etc to be connected up. A godsend in a mixed network ...

Manufacturer's product description
The Cisco SR224G 24-Port 10/100 2-Port Gigabit Switch + 2 Mini-GBIC delivers nonblocking, wire-speed switching for your 10/100-Mbps network clients, plus multiple options for connecting to your network backbone. Twenty-four 10/100 ports wire up your workstations, while the integrated 10/100/1000 ports or mini Gigabit Interface Converter (mini-GBIC) ports connect to your servers or backbone at Gigabit speeds. The Cisco SR224G incorporates nonblocking, wire-speed architecture that forwards packets as fast as your network can deliver them. It features broadcast storm suppression that maximizes the system availability. Also included are Address Learning and Aging to prevent data transfer errors and Data Flow Control to help prevent packet loss. All ports have automatic medium dependent interface (MDI) and MDI crossover (MDI-X) detection, so you don't have to worry about the cable type. Each port independently and automatically negotiates for best speed and whether to run in half- or full-duplex mode. Head-of-line blocking prevention keeps your high-speed clients from bogging down in lower-speed traffic, and fast store-and-forward switching prevents damaged packets from being passed on to the network. No matter how intensive your network demands, the Cisco SR224G 24-Port 10/100 2-Port Gigabit Switch + 2 Mini-GBIC has speed, flexibility, and reliability that you can count on.
