Advantages: Easy to set up, configure and use Disadvantages: None
We currently run an 80 user network in our office. While the main traffic of our network is handled by 6, 24port rack mounted switches, my little IT office has 7 PCs in it with not enough ports on the wall to connect them up.
this poses a problem. To connect to our network, you need a network connection on the Wall. There are 4 connections in our office and 7 machines. Obviously 7 into 4 does not go so a solution was needed.
The answer?
A small desktop based switch that would allow us to connect up to 16 computers to one Network connection on the wall.
The Product?
Well we use Netgear equipment in our office because you know with Netgear, you are buying quality at an affordable price.
So we opted for the FS116 Desktop Switch.
The size of it?
Well its about an inch high and about a foot long. It is about 6 inches from ...
Advantages: Excellent quality. loads of features, easy to install Disadvantages: None
of bolt it into the Rack!
The size of the switch is very small for its capacity. The 24ports are very compact and this is a bit of a double edged sword. True, you can get a lot of computers hooked up to it while using a very small item but it can also be too fiddly. When there are 24 network cables hanging around and clipped in, it is exremely hard to unclip one individual cable on a packed switch.
The indicator lights above each port tell you when the port is live and being used. This is handy for when you need to pull out "dead" cables. It siginifies if there is any network traffic coming out of the port.
The guide lights on the left hand side also make a great "quick glance" reference.
The autocinfigure button is available and used to allow a mixture of network speeds, cable types, etc to be connected up. A godsend in a mixed network ...

Manufacturer's product description
The Linksys WebView Managed switch allows you to expand your network securely. Configuration of the switch is secured using SSL for Web access and SSH for Telnet access. User control is secured using 802.1x security using a RADIUS authentication mechanism and can also be controlled using MAC filtering.Extensive QoS features make the solution ideal for real-time applications like Voice and Video. The 4 priority queues together with the Weighted Round Robin and Strict Priority scheduling techniques facilitate efficient co-existence of real-time traffic with data traffic allowing them each to meet their QoS needs. Individual users or applications can be prioritized above others using various Class of Service options - by port, layer 2 priority (802.1p), Layer 3 priority (TOS or DSCP), or IPv6 Traffic Class. Intelligent Broadcast, Multicast, and Unknown Unicast storm control minimizes and contain the effect of these types of traffic on regular traffic. IGMP Snooping limits bandwidth-intensive video traffic to only the requestors without flooding to all users. Incoming traffic can be policed and outgoing traffic can be shaped allowing you to control network access and traffic flow. There are features that allow you to expand and grow your network of switches. Link aggregation allows multiple high-bandwidth trunks between switches to be setup. This also provides a level of reliability in that the system continues to operate if one of the links break. Spanning Tree (STP), Fast Spanning Tree, and Multiple Spanning Tree allow you to build a mesh of switches increasing the availability of the system. The rich management functionality of the WebView switches includes SNMP, RMON, Telnet, and HTTP Management options, allowing you to flexibly integrate and manage these devices in your network.
