Manufacturer's product description
Small businesses require cost-effective yet scalable networking solutions that can meet changing business needs. The Cisco SRW2048 48-Port Gigabit Switch brings Gigabit speeds to your users and servers, while increasing the intelligence and security of the network infrastructure. The forty-eight 10/100/1000 Mbps ports enable you to take advantage of the Gigabit Ethernet interfaces shipping in the current generation of servers, workstations, and storage devices, in addition to supporting your existing 10/100 Mbps clients. Network security is a top priority in any size business. Most business data networks, large and small, are unsecure. Unauthorized access to the network and mission-critical data is a constant concern. The Cisco SRW2048 helps secure the network by using 802.1X port authentication, access control lists (ACLs), and MAC addresses port locking. The 802.1X standard requires clients to authenticate themselves before the port will pass data for them. Businesses are recognizing the benefits of voice over IP (VoIP) and are quickly migrating their voice services to IP-based platforms, requiring their local area networks to support both voice and data applications. In unmanaged IP networks, bursty data sessions can disrupt voice packet delivery, causing poor voice quality. With the enhanced QoS and traffic management features in the Cisco SRW2048, voice data can be prioritized, helping ensure clear and reliable voice communications. Taking advantage of the advanced features of the Cisco SRW2048 can further secure the integrity of your network. The WebView interface provides an intuitive, highly secure management interface, enabling you to better utilize the comprehensive feature set of the switch for a better-optimized, more secure network.
Advantages: Easy to set up, configure and use Disadvantages: None
...We currently run an 80 user network in our office. While the main traffic of our network is handled by 6, 24 port rack mounted switches, my little IT office has 7 PCs in it with not enough ports on the wall to connect them up.
this poses a problem. To connect to our network, you need a network connection on the Wall. There are 4 connections in our office and 7 machines. Obviously 7 into 4 does not go so a solution was needed.
The answer?
A small desktop based switch that would allow us to connect up to 16 computers to one Network connection on the wall.
The Product?
Well we use Netgear equipment in our office because you know with Netgear, you are buying quality at an affordable price.
So we opted for the FS116 Desktop Switch.
The size of it?
Well its about an inch high and about a foot long. It is about 6 inches from...

Advantages: easy setup ( if know what doing ) Disadvantages: easy to break.
...Another entry onto the cisco scene is the catalyst 4948 switch. 48ports with four G-bic options for either fiber optics or standard RJ45 cables.
setting up:
this is made quite simple by the console port on the back. Using a program such as hyperterminal willl allow you to access the flash drive, and change the settings
ease of setup:
quite an easy switch to setup, it has the usual kind of cisco program, with the easy option to upgrade the firmware/ software on it. To setup a Vlan, you use the configuration terminal within. (conft)
Breakabiltity:
as it says on the box really: fragile. It can stand the usual bumps and scratches with its metal casing, but if dropped will usually break one of the ports.
Flashing:
using the console port, you can set it up to flash the firmware, and put either an upgrade or downgrade...

Advantages: Advantages: Cheap, all in one solution Disadvantages: No manual overide or audio support
.... The leads were of a generous length allowing some room to manoeuvre on PC placement.
Features
As noted, the Belkin supports two PCs. The video side uses a VGA connector and supports resolutions of up to 2048x1536 @65Hz.
Switching between PCs is done via an easily remembered keyboard sequence. I would however have like to have had a manual button on the device itself in case the keystroke sequence interfered with anything. Also, if the current PC locks up, you can't switch to the other without rebooting the locked one which can be a pain - again, a manual switch would help here.
The top of the Belkin features a pair of LEDs to show which PC is currently selected.
If you need to keep an eye on both PCs, you can enable autoscan mode which toggles back and forth between the PCs every eight seconds. A quick press of the space bar...
