You could go out and purchase a cheaper, lower quality router that would get the job done, but may not enable you to expand in the future. You may wish to host a Web server, or email server in which case you will need a Router that can handle large volumes of traffic whilst maintaining security. Or perhaps you wish to allow remote office users access to your internal resources? Whatever you need, the Cisco operating system is extremely flexible in its ability to adapt to user requirements. After trying many ADSL modems with integrated wireless routers such as 3Com, I decided to give this one a try firstly because the other devices were so hard to install that I gave up and second because I've read so many reviews saying that it's so easy to install that even a novice like me would have no problems.
I purchased it from Ebay (usually not my favourite retailer) and received it the following day. The router came with one ethernet cable, one LAN cable, power adaptor, CD-rom and a brief manual.
I popped the CD-rom in and connected the modem to my PC. The CD-rom contains a detailed help manual, but not any installation drives or anything like that. the 2950 as a router with the added bonus of having VPN capabilities but with a CISCO, although considerably more expensive, usually has hardware that is made for the job in particular so I would expect a CISCO to perform better than the Draytek (but I do not know from experience).
A CISCOrouter would probably require fewer reboots (maybe once a year or even less) so they are more reliable but they would require a CISCO qualified engineer to configure (at cost). Despite this, if the budget allows, I?d also consider CISCO products for the added security and reliability. However for a small to medium business where budget is limited, the Draytek Vigor 2950 can do the job, is easy to configure, is low cost and has good manufacturer support so I?m happy to recommend it.
