increase your network traffic's speed. A switch serves the same function as a hub in a network design: it links up your network equipment. But unlike a simple hub, which divides the network's bandwidth among all the attached devices, a switch delivers full network speeds at each port. Installing this cost-effective 5-Port 10/100 Switch can potentially increase your network speed by five times! It's the perfect way of integrating 10 Mbps Ethernet and 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet devices, too. All five ports can negotiate speeds automtically, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you don't have to worry about the cable type. Each port independently negotiates the best speed and half- or full-duplex mode, for up to 200Mbps of bandwidth per port. Fast store-and-delay switching prevents damaged packets from being passed on into the network. The new ultra-compact case is sure to fit into your workgroup environment. Letthe Linksys SD205 5-Port 10/100 Switch kick your 10/100 network into high gear!

Advantages: Better than a hub, Well priced Disadvantages: Only 5 ports, yet another damn power adapter!
...(also tells you the current load (%) on the network), but was just too slow when copying large files from machine to machine (like when I need to install or copy a windows service pack onto a machine (100megs worth!)
Actually, its not that slow, but in this day and age, I want it copied and I WANT IT NOW! So patiance is not one of my more exercised virtues... Along comes the Linksys5portswitch. Firstly, While wondering through PC World (yes, I know), I started to look and the hubs, hoping a 100BaseT would catch my eye for next to nothing. Well, that didn't happen. There were some nice 3Com hubs, but for a 100BaseT, I was looking at over £100.
Then something caught my eye. It was screaming 200Mbs at me and was only £70. I picked up the box with trembling hands, it was not a hub, it was a switch...I had heard of these, but thought...

Advantages: small, plug and play, cheap Disadvantages: not manageable but at this price, can't complain
...I've known Netgear's stuff through work, and needed a little switch for home as I have currently have three PCs connected and sharing an internet connection.
For those who are unaware of what a network switch does, it allows multiple computers to talk to one-another via their network cards. As most PCs now come with at least one network port as standard, then having more than PC in a household becomes an interesting prospect.
This is the smallest 5portswitch I have ever seen, not much wider than the 5 network ports at it's rear. The unit comes with a power supply, but no network cables, these will need to be purchased seperately.
Each port has a single status indicator on the front of the switch, flashing when transfer is taking place.
This is a 10/100 network switch, gigabit switches are available elsewhere. This switch is non...

Advantages: Fast, tiny, attractive, cool, compatible, compliant Disadvantages: Not enough ports (but then it is a 5 port), a little more expensive than similar units by others
...I’ve been scratching my head for hours, wondering what anyone can say about a piece of equipment that simply works, and I have to admit I’m still scratching. Hey – watchit!
I can’t think of anything I have ever owned that is more reliable. It does exactly what it is supposed to, which is to act as a conduit through which a collection of computer network enabled devices will work.
The Linksys Etherfast 5PortSwitch has 5 x 10 or 100mbps autosensing RJ45 ports for use in a Category 3 or 5 cabled environment, utilising 10BaseT, or 100BaseTX switched half and/or full duplex, technology in a star network topology. The bus topology, which utilises BNC connectors, is not directly supported. (Note: Cat3 cabling = 10BaseT only.) So if used correctly it is as fast as the technology allows.
I cannot think of a single reason why it would...
