...Just when you thought I’d gone soft, writing about interesting things like travel, here’s another one of my computer hardware jobs to bring you back to earth.
Unlike ‘Two Sheds Jackson’, who was only thinking of getting two sheds, I’ve actually got three PCs, all of which are networked, two by being hard-wired to a broadband router and the third on the far end of a ‘wi-fi’ link down in the stygian depths of my house, or the dining room as it’s sometimes known.
My existing networking kit, also supplied by Linksys took care of all the shared access to the Telewest broadband internet service and any file and printer sharing that I may have set up between my PC, thus the main hub of this kit used to go under the lengthy title of ‘combined broadband router/switch/wireless access point’.

The product most likely based on features and price was the Linksys WAG54G.Therefore this review has turned out to be more of a comparison of the two than just on this one product and a lot of the information provided very similar to that in the previous review. I should also point out this review is fairly technical, given the chance of 2 reviews it would be nice to write another for the slightly less technically proficient but alas that is not an option. Now just in case you don't know Linksys are now owned by CISCO - sort of one of them names you know you can trust as most of the Internet is run off there kit.
Like the NetGear this device is made up of the following - an ADSL MODEM, 4-port Switch, Wireless Access Point and Firewall. Bear this in mind when making...

The set up for this literally took me 2 mins, most of that was finding the piece of paper that I wrote my ADSL username / password down on, so that I could enter this into the setup wizard.
Routers can be configured much much more than this, with specific country settings, however the default settings on this router, sold in the UK are for the UK settings, so there is nothing else that you would need to configure initially.
After completing the set up wizard, I could see that the 'Internet' LED on the router lit up ( showing that it tried logging in with the username / password that I supplied during set up, and it authenticated / logged in )
The set up wizard confirmed that setup had completed, and that it would open a browser to confirm that you had connectivity ( basically just opens up the Linksys website, if you see it then hey...
