Just last week I bought the Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Home Gateway WAG200G which is 802.11g according to the box. It was great I could have one small box to do both wired and wireless networking. I didn't know much about it but I thought how hard could it be? On the box free tech support that sounds good I thought. So I decided to give it a go. I paid £40.00 for it. When I got it home I opened it straight away and I tried using and the instructions they told me how to set up a wired connection in detail but showed no real advice on wireless.
If I go out and buy something that states its WIRELESS IT SHOULD TELL ME HOW TO SET IT UP WITHOUT WIRES SO I DONT NEED TO PUT IT UNDER CARPETS AND THROUGH WALLS! Instead of a manual I had to guess exactly how it would work. So after what seemed like hours I gave up on it. The instruction manual had no useful detail and the cd was not much use for helping hints either it asked for things that I just did not have the answer to like what is your vci and vpi number.
Eventually the next day after seeking help online I did get it working though only through those tips on the internet. I have three computers so I bought a wireless USB stick for another £15.00 it was by talktalk now I had spent £55.00 my third computer was right beside the "wireless router" so I use the Ethernet cable provided to connect so now I can connect all my computers at once. I have read up and now know that I can have thirty two wireless computers connected and four computers connected with Ethernet cables which I think is not to bad for £40.00.
All in all I am getting quite good speeds considering that I have three computers connected at any one time. So I would recommend it if you have the time and patience to get it set up. If I could change two things I would change the fact that need to keep it plugged in for power because I had to use an extension cable for it to reach where I think it would work best. Also the plug is very bulky and along with that to turn it of I have to get to the plug itself to turn it off at the wall. I.e. there is no switch on actual router. Not helpful when plug hidden behind massive bookshelf.
On the other hand the leds tell you easily what is working and what isn't and I think that most people would understand it. I.e. led full on when working, flashing when connecting and off when not connected at all. At the moment four lights are on. The power, wireless, DSL and the all powerful internet.
Once again if you are buying this make sure you can the wires if you go by the manuals guide!
