In the depths of London I had a problem, that being I have one DSL line and three computers all stand alone so the options open to me were either CAT 5my home or try this new fangled magical technology called Wireless… And so it began.
I went on line and found this delightful looking product the WAP54G and being from Linksys meant it was also from Cisco and you can not get a Cisco wireless Access point for under £50 so I went for it.
The Specifications of the Linksys Had everything that I needed B+G compatible in the 2.4 frequency category Security includes 256 encryption, WEP, WPA, WPA -RADIUS
So with this I went off to work on installing it. Firstly I would like to say what a user friendly set up this Access Point (AP) has all you have to do is connect to your PC network port with a normal network cable run the CD, Run the set up Utility where it will auto detect the AP. From there change the IP address to a static and of course give the AP a SSID (name). And your more or less done. With this AP you get to use the far superior WPA-PSK which again is very easy to use with the Set up program so when it comes to ease of setting up this AP has top marks without sacrificing ease for security.
After finding a suitable location near my phone line where I could install it I put the WPA-PSK information into my laptop then connected straight away. The distance that this AP covers is suitable for my home and the signal could travel well into my garden about 40m, obviously living in an open plan would increase this distance.
I have used had all three computers on line at once and there has not been a problem or any conflicts at all. Also I have tried gaming from PC to PC with generals and there isn't q noticeable delay at all.
The only real hang up's about it are it feels like it is a toy and that it could be broken very easily. And that you can change the default password but you can not change the default log in name (not the SSID)
All in all I think that this is a great little AP and is worth the £50 I paid for it, I am even starting to install them into my place of work
