This is a wi-fibroadband router. It can link together four computers with cables, plus others without cables. It does this by transmitting from under the desk (that's where I shoved mine), acting like a short range radio station. My laptop can pick up the internet even though it isn't physically connected to anything.
When I ordered this router it arrived next day before 7.30 which was amazing. I had a few teething troubles with my cable modem which used to be on USB to my PC and needed to be connected via LAN. I called my ISP and they twiddled and that went away. Everything else was very easy and went well.
Configuring the security was a bit tricky - setting a 'WPA pre-shared key' wasn't obvious. But I put CONFIGURING SECURITY WRT54G into Google which gave me the relevant Linksys support page and then it was really easy. I don't want my neighbours checking out the family photos after all! If you don't set a code then anyone with a laptop that can pick up these kinds of transmissions could sit outside in a car messing with your hard drive. This means that figuring out the 'WPA pre-shared key' - uninviting as it may sound - is well worth the effort.
Now I can email people in bed or in the garden. And after a hub where my main PC had to be on, now only the one I happen to be using has to be.
I wish I'd thrown the hub out and gone for this set up earlier.
I'd recommend this product very highly as it has been faultessly combining four PCs as a games LAN wired with RJ45 type cables, as well as making a good connection with my laptop, for a couple of untroubled months.
As I write this, they are available for £51.99.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
One, you didnt really go very far to explain what this is. Though maybe it is obvious to ppl who use computers...and just not me. So, I wouldnt have rated it low just for that. But, then you didnt seem to go into much detail about the features, or cost, or where to buy either. You just kind of gave an overview of how hard or easy 'it' was to set up. I still am at a loss as to what it is. Considering it is best to get as many reviews from as many ppl as possible, sometimes it helps to tell ppl what something is, if it isnt instantly obvious. But then, that is just me. Maybe I have just been sleeping. I have no idea what a broadband router is, or how neighbors can view your piccys or email because you have one. : - ) More info would give a re-rate. Just send a message to my guestbook. Good luck! Than you for the review!
