The Linksys WRT54GS in my honourable opinion is a great piece of kit. First of all its a product of Cisco Systems, which to me instantly suggests "decent box" as Cisco is one of (if not THE) biggest names in networking. And second, after running this box as the core of my network for almost 12 months now, Ive found it to be a reliable and more secure than some of the previous routers I have owned.
I must admit there are much better looking routers which much the same capabilites on the market but looks arent everything.
I bought this so I could experiment with Wireless as I hadnt really experienced that type of networking before. A downfall of this product for me was the lack of guidance provided by Linksys in the way of instructions on how to securely setup your wireless connection. Although I found a plethora of information on this with the help of a certain search engine ;-)
During my searches for this information I stumbled across various websites that explain how the firmware that runs this box can be developed by anyone as it was written in Linux and therefore is open source.
Now for anyone who who wants to add features seen in much higher price routers/switches to a reletavely cheap box this is great. But of course you won't recieve any technical support from Linksys if it all goes pear-shaped so don't say I didnt warn you.
I have found that the wirless range is more than enough to let me connect anywhere in my flat and stays steady for the most part. Also its nice to know that your the only person on your network with the help of the wirless MAC filters. A majorly branded feature of this router is its Speedbooster technology. Where basically if all the wireless devices on the network are Speedbooster compatable (which is a linkys only technology) the speed and range of the wireless signal is increased by upto 35%. I think this is more of a clever marketing claim as so far Ive not been able to accuratly test it but when I do Ill let you know. :-)
Also if you need a hard wire connection for whatever reason you have 4 ethernet ports to choose from. So this will take care of all your home networking needs.
By the way there are QoS settings and parental controls for blocking cetain access at certain times etc. I have found the QoS really useful as I have a VOIP phone adapter connected and so the Linksys gives priority for bandwidth to that bpx ensuring my phone calls are always high quality.
All in all I say 2 thumbs fresh product. Definite recommendation.
Oh yeah i bought this for around £55 on overclockers.co.uk about 12 months ago, the price has only depreciated by a few pounds but I say its worth it.

A nicely presented review and I can tell you will do really well here already. Not being technically minded I was left with a few questions after reading the review. One is what type of software do you get and is this easy to install on your computer and apart from the faster speed are there any other real benefits from choosing this compared to a normal router?
