My housemate bought a Linksys wireless G router for our broadband, so after looking around for a while I decided to purchase this card. I have not been disappointed.
The installation is very easy, however it is important to follow the guidelines in the package and install the software before the hardware. This makes life so much easier, as I was to discover the hard way.
The driver/connectivity software that comes with the card installs painlessly if you follow the instructions and do it first!!! The software provides a 'console' type interface with the card, and allows you to connect to most wireless networks without any futher action. If the wireless access point is security-enabled (which they all should be!), there is a step-by-step 'wizard' to help you connect to it. It will ask you the security details, and then it does all the negotiation. I have used this card with about 30 different commercial, business and home networks, and haven't had a problem connecting to any of them once I was given the correct security settings to input.
The software puts a small icon in the system-tray, which constantly shows you how good the connection to the wireless network is. This is good if you need a quick connection to download big emails whilst in a net cafe: you can walk around the room, looking at the icon to see where abouts you get the best connection. Then just sit down there and away you go.
Although it is hard to measure the speed of the card by perception alone, I find that it does seem to be quicker when I am at home with the Linksys router with the Speedbooster technology enabled. This is purely subjective and could very much be the placebo effect, but that's my experience. Even whilst in a busy public wireless access point or net cafe, I find the speed to be very much what I would expect, and in most instances, I think it is my old notebook that is slowing the system down rather than the card.
The only really issue that I have with this card is that it seems a little bulky on the bit that hangs outside the PCMCIA slot. One of my friends has a D-Link card which has a lot less hanging out the side. This isn't a major problem, but I am always conscious that it isn't part of the laptop body and shouldn't have any weight put on it, or that it shouldn't be knocked.
Other than that, this is a great wireless card, and I am more than happy to recommend it.
