The Linksys Wireless-G PCI card is perfect for adding Wireless functionality to your home Computer and is a definite buy if you are building your own home wireless network.
Before buying its worth checking that you have a spare PCI slot in your PC, installation is nothing more daunting than removing the cover of your computer (powered off of course!!) and slotting the card into one of the free PCU slots. If you are running Windows XP the operating system will detect the new card automatically and prompt you for the driver CD, other operating systems will require that you insert the CD first.
The card comes with a quick start guide which contains more than adequate instructions for installation; however for the more advanced user there is a full instruction manual in electronic form on the enclosed CD-ROM.
It is backwards compatible with Wireless-B and so will work with older models of Wireless routers and Access Points
There are definitely cheaper alternatives around however air on the side of caution, as these generally have inferior quality aerials and tend to be much less reliable. With Linksys you are buying into years and years of networking experience as they are the “home user brand” of networking giant Cisco systems.
Advantages: None Disadvantages: Doesn't Work, Poor Signal
I wanted to link two of my homes computers so I could play games on a Local Area Network. I know a good bit about computers so I didn't think networking would be too hard. I was wrong.
I decided to purchase 2 of these cards and a hub along with loads of cables. In total I spent a good 150 pounds.
I first tried the network card.I opened the case and popped one in the computer then repeated this for the next one. I then installed the software and ... ...no time. Apart from the fact they didn't seem to know each other was there. They connected and had a good signal 85% of the time. But the data swapping just didn't happen. I looked at the user guide but this failed to help.
I tried uninstalling firewalls, closing firewalls and at one point moving them 2 inchs apart from each other. This still failed to do anything. I tested both cards and they seemed to work fine.
I decided to try adding the hub ...

Advantages: It looks pretty Disadvantages: It will not work, a complete failure to connect.
...one of these with a Linksys WAG 200G router as a kit. The router took 3 weeks and lots of email with India before it worked. Having finally got it up and running I installed the WMP54G in my extra PC, guess what? Despite careful set up, (CD software first ) and 2 hours on the phone to Mumbai ,it will not associate with the linksys router!! I assumed that 2 pieces of kit in the same box from the same manufacturer would interface seamlessly. How naive ... ...india, replies take at least a week and are ineffectual. However I will persist just to be a nuisance, (its my spare PC and not urgent). I installed a Belkin kit for a friend today and the router and wireless adapter connected first time, no messing. I even got a wireless connection to a laptop set up at the same time. It's not me that's the problem Guv!
The moral is clear, stay well clear of Linksys.

Advantages: Easy to install, it's inside your PC so is nicely hidden! Disadvantages: Slow, crap range, I can send more data faster on foot
...wirelesscard as a solution, you'll go straight back to cabled networking with a curse upon all wireless equipment to ever infiltrate into your abode.
Linksys' Wireless-GPCICard, model number WMP54G, capable of 54Mbps compared to the older 11Mbps of the older wireless network standard, nearly 5x faster. Also compatible with the old standard as well so that you don't have to worry about immediately purchasing all new cards for all your PCs! Sound good on paper, but that's until you plug it in and find out what porkies Linksys has spewed out upon it's silver tray.
Firstly, ignore that picture in the top left hand corner.. that's the wrong image of what the card looks like. Ciao are really not good at keeping their websites up to date nowadays. The card comes very nicely boxed with instruction manuals, warrantee info and driver's CD...
