Advantages: Excellent Midrange With Suprising Base For A Bookshelf Speaker
Disadvantages: At This Price Point -- None

...I have read what few reviews there are on the Later versions of the Linn Kan. I have found the typical "click" snobbishness that I myself once espoused regarding my15 ohm version of the Rogers LS 3/5A; a speaker that to this day I remember quite fondly and which continues to be a cult classic. While I have never owned an original pair of Linn Kans or the second version (whether they were the passive or biwireable version), I have been using a pair of Linn Kan MK V's for the past four years (purchased new along with a Linn Classik CD Receiver which I absolutely love). The V series of the Kan appears to be more efficient than the earlier versions and while the cabinets may not be up the standard as the originals (these appear to be MDF covered in a vinyl made to look like wood covering), the drivers most certainly are. Advantages: Excellent sound, cheap on the used market, remote control, MM & MC phono stage
Disadvantages: Hard to find, uses special cables except for phono stage

...The Linn LK 1 is a high end full function solid state stereo (2 channel) analog audio preamplifier sold worldwide (120 and 240 volt versions were produced) from 1985 through the early 1990's. On the used market it is a fantastic bargain even if one only uses it for the phono stage, which will accommodate both low or high output moving coil & moving magnet cartridges. The Dirak remote power supply option (rare) allows this 20 year old solid state design to compete with current preamps costing in the multiple thousands of $$, of solid state or tube design. The LK 1 can be found on e-bay is various condition from like new to needing repair. Prices range from $100 for a rough condition unit to as much as $500 for a pristine example with the Dirak power supply and a full set of interconnect cables. Advantages: Very good upgrade for Linn Karik users
Disadvantages: You may run out of sockets....

...This review is aimed at the people who understand what a DAC is if you don't please DON'T tell me in your opinions column. I have an aktiv Linn system with a Karik 3 as the main source. Whilst the sound quality is good it never seemed to achieve that 'spine tingling' feel that you often got in a dem room or at a show, and despite playing around with the set up of the equipment still no real breakthrough. The addition of the Numerik has however made possibly the biggest single upgrade since changing from a Dual 505 to an LP12. The detail and timing are 10 times better as well as the speakers sounding as if they 5 times their actual size. I am assuming that the addition of any DAC would have a similar improvement as long as the rest of the kit is up to it. This review is aimed at the very people who understand the benefits of a DAC...
