An excellent DVD+- CD-RW Review of LiteOn LDW-851S by mppreece Advantages: High compatibility, fast, easy to install. Disadvantages: Slower than today's models. Doesn't do dual-layer, no software included. ...I have owned many CD-RW drives, but this was my first DVD+- RW. I am very very pleased with it. This driver reads DVDs at 12x, and Cds at 52x. The Lite On writes DVD+R at 8x, and DVD-R at 4x. This is slower than today's maximum of 16x, but it is certainly not slow! It can write a whole 4.7GB DVD at 8x in 14 minutes. CD-RW speeds go up to 42x. A 700MB cd is done in 3.5 minutes. I have NEVER had a coaster (failed disc) with this DVD-RW in over 90 attempts. This is with the DATAWRITE 4x DVD-R discs (yellow), and with Benq 52x CD-R. This is a testament to the superb Lite-On buffer underrun protection, and the 851S 2MB cache. On purchasing, it is recommended that you update the drive's firmware to support all RW discs. This can be done following instructions on the Lite On website. Let it burn! Review of LiteOn LDW-851S by Bossman1959 Advantages: Low cost, Multi format capable, Disadvantages: Slightly flimsy media tray ...mentioned but the ones with the best combinations seemed very expensive. Imagine my delight when I came across the Lite-on LDW-851S which can write using all of the DVD formats except DVD-RAM and it also writes CD-R and CD-RW. All this for less than one hundred pounds. I didn't waste any time in ordering one from my local supplier. It arrived very quickly and I am pleased to say I fitted it with a very minimum of problems (none at all) and it looked good when in place. There was an audio lead included in the pack which puzzled me somewhat as the modern CD/DVD drives take the sound data via the IDE cables but what the hell, I don't mind getting more than I need! I am using it with Windows XP but it is supported by Windows 98, 2000 & ME as well. One thing it might be worth bearing in mind is that if you intend to use Nero to burn DVD... LITE-ON Information Technology corportation are constantly devoloping anit-vibration mechanical design, advanced circuit design and increased performance. LITE-ON Information Technology Corporation (LITE-ON I.T.) this was a big part of the LITE-ON group which concentrated on the optical storage devices which then led to the creation on these fine CDROM drives we have today. This LITE-ON CD-RW is a very good drive and after purchasing one for personnal use I have purchased many more for computers I have built for friends and family.
