About a year ago I decided I really needed a DVD player to attach to my TV - I hadn't worried about it previously as I have had a Tivo system for years (the forerunner of Sky+) so had been using digital recording features for ages. However what I was lacking was the ability to play DVDs on the TV and the ability to record programmes in a transferrable format now and again.
I have to confess I wasn't really sure what I was looking for as I went around the shops other than a machine that wasn't too expensive, given my projected occasional use, and something that would record to a wide range of formats and to a good quality.
In my travels I happened upon the Liteon 5002 which boasted the wide range of recording formats I wanted - according to the blurb as it offers: Supported Media (read): DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, CD-ROM Supported Media (write): DVD+R & DVD+RW ( DVD+VR Mode ) Supported content formats: DVD-Video, DVD+VR, Video CD, Super VCD, Audio CD, MP3, JPEG
It also offered: 2 SCART sockets Progressive Scan Output IEEE 1394 Input port VideoPLUS+ Recording Dolby Digital
The machine costs between £70 and £100 depending on where you purchase (and the offers available) so it is reasonably priced but as you would imagine in that price range you don't get the latest technology such a Freeview decoders and electronic programme guides which is what I might look for if I were purchasing again today.
My Liteon 5002 came securely boxed complete with the remote control but without a scart lead so you will need to purchase one if you don't have one already. The instruction book was clearly set out and easy to follow with lots of diagrams showing all the relevant connections for connecting to equipment However it was in the setting up that I encoutered my only snag. Because I have both a Sky box and the Tivo box it was more complicated than the procedure set out in the manual and proved to be something of challenge which was quite tricky to overcome ( for me at least - for the technically minded it might have been a breeze!).
The Liteon is capable of recording using the VideoPlus system or using the timer record facility making choosing your recordings quite straightforward. I have also used it to save videos from my video camera on to DVD without any problems at all. Recording quality is good. The flexibility of being able to use it to display my CDs of digital still photographs on my TV is quite useful as well, particularly as I am a keen digital photographer and the pictures look much superior on the TV screen.
Navigation between the various recordings on a disc is simple and straightforward so I found once I got used to the features on offer it was very intuitive to use. The casing is basic, pale grey with simple lines - not the most stylish piece of kit on the market but functional and not offensive. The remote control is easy to use, the buttons are logically laid out and simple to operate. This is a basic machine which met my needs at the time I purchased it and in the year since I bought it I have had no problems with it at all.
Overall it is useful addition to my recording capabilities and for the price it has proved to be a good buy.
Advantages: it looks pretty!!! Disadvantages: it doesnt work at all
Liteon LVW-5002 DVD Player
I have had this DVD player now for a couple of years and I think I am stuck with it until I can get the funds together to get another one. I have been disappointed with this player since day one and I wish I had returned it as soon as I realised how rubbish it truly was.
I bought it from Curry's as I say a few years ago when the recordable DVD player first came out. I paid £180 for the machine with remote control and ... ...for a recordable DVD player at that time. I think you can pick them up for probably about half the price now.
The DVD player really looks the part and is a lovely silver and mirror design. The player looks very flash and the mirrors on the box hide the part where you put in the DVD disc. There are few buttons on the outside of the box such as the on/off button, play, stop, record and pause buttons are also featured but as time has gone on these ...

Advantages: Cheap, Plays MP3's and Photo CD's, Good sound Disadvantages: Poor build quality and mine like others have broken after a few months
This was the first DVD recorder that i bought about two and a half years ago and seen as it was fairly new technology, i opted for the cheapest i could find, and hence i ended up with this. I have been a bit disappointed with the recorder since i first bought it, mainly due to its poor build quality and confusing menus. Set up was fairly straight forward using the scart sockets on the back of the machine and the remote was easy to use and well laid ... ...option to use optical cable, rf tuners, digital outs and audio/video connections which gives the user a wide choice depending on your needs. The recorder plays pre recorded DVD's very well although i do find it is a bit noisy when reading the disc. The dolby sound from the machine is very crisp and the same is true when playing MP3 cd's using this system. The problems for me only started when i used it for recording. After a few months I found the ...
